Rwanda: FERWAFA unveils two-year FIFA project to elevate youth football

FERWAFA has officially unveiled a two-year FIFA–FERWAFA Talent Development Scheme (TDS), a major initiative aimed at transforming the landscape of youth football in Rwanda.

The program, launched in partnership with FIFA, is expected to overhaul talent identification, strengthen elite training systems, and build a clear, nationwide development pathway for young players.

Speaking at the launch, FERWAFA President Fabrice Shema emphasized that the project is a strategic step toward raising the performance levels of Rwanda’s youth national teams.

He highlighted that the ultimate goal is to position both the boys’ and girls’ U-17 teams to compete for qualification in the 2028 FIFA U-17 World Cup editions, marking a new era of ambition for the country’s football development agenda.

FIFA’s Antony Baffoe delivered a strong message of support, reaffirming the global body’s commitment to backing Rwanda’s long-term football vision.

He noted that the TDS will prioritize early talent discovery, structured training environments, coaching development, and modern performance standards to ensure young players progress through a competitive and well-managed pathway.

The two-year initiative is expected to impact academies, schools, regional centers, and national youth teams—laying the foundation for Rwanda to produce a consistent stream of high-level players ready for international competition.
