Rwanda Airports Company (RAC) emerged as the undisputed champions of the ARPST Genocide Memorial Tournament 2026, securing three major titles.
Organized by the Association of Workers’ Sports in Rwanda (ARPST), in partnership with the Rwanda National Olympic and Sports Committee (RNOC), the tournament is held to honor and remember those who lost their lives in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The 5th edition finals staged across multiple venues including Mumena, CSK, RP-Kigali, Kimisagara and Zaria Courts.
Before every match, participants observed a minute of silence in memory of the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi.
RAC’s dominance was highlighted by victories in Category A Football, Category A Volleyball and Category A Basketball, making the institution the most successful participant of this year’s edition.
In the Football Category A final, RAC completed a comprehensive double over CHUB.
Having won the first leg 2-0, RAC repeated the same scoreline in the return fixture to secure a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory and lift the title in convincing fashion.
The football triumph was matched by another impressive display on the volleyball.
RAC defeated CHUB 3-0 in the final, maintaining the superiority they had shown in the first leg, which also ended in a straight-sets victory.
The result confirmed RAC as champions of the Men’s Volleyball Category A competition.
RAC also added the Men’s Basketball Category A title to their collection, completing a historic treble that underscored the institution’s strength across multiple sporting disciplines.
Elsewhere, Rwanda Immigration Service enjoyed a successful tournament in Category B competitions.
In football, they defeated REG Rwanda 2-0 in the final to claim the championship trophy.
Their basketball team also celebrated title success after overcoming the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) with a 79-60 victory in the second leg, having edged the first encounter 80-74.
The ARPST Genocide Memorial Tournament continues to play a significant role in promoting remembrance through sport while strengthening solidarity among public institutions.
Beyond competition, the tournament serves as a platform to honor former athletes and sports figures who lost their lives during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi began on April 7, 1994, following the assassination of then-President Juvénal Habyarimana.
Over a period of 100 days, more than one million people, predominantly Tutsi, were systematically killed by extremist militias and government forces.
The Genocide against the Tutsi was brought to an end in July 1994 when the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF), under the leadership of Paul Kagame, now President of the Republic of Rwanda, stopped the massacres and liberated the country.
Today, Rwanda continues to promote remembrance, justice, and reconciliation while ensuring that the history and lessons of the genocide are preserved for future generations.
