Real Madrid sign Ibrahima Konate on four-year deal

Real Madrid have strengthened their defensive ranks with the signing of French international Ibrahima Konate on a four-year contract following the expiration of his deal with Liverpool.

The move marks another major addition to Jose Mourinho’s rebuilding project at the Santiago Bernabeu as the Portuguese coach prepares the club for a renewed challenge on all fronts.

The Spanish giants confirmed the agreement on Thursday, announcing that Konate will remain at the club until June 30, 2030.

The defender joins fellow summer arrivals Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva as Real Madrid continue an ambitious transfer campaign after enduring two consecutive seasons without winning a major trophy.

Konate arrives in Madrid as one of Europe’s most accomplished central defenders.

Born on May 25, 1999, in Paris, France, to Malian parents, he began his football journey at Paris FC before joining Sochaux’s academy.

His impressive performances quickly attracted attention, earning him a move to German side RB Leipzig in 2017.

During his four seasons in Germany, Konate established himself as one of the Bundesliga's most promising young defenders.

He helped Leipzig become one of Germany's strongest clubs, contributing to their qualification for the UEFA Champions League and their run to the semi-finals of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League.

His performances earned widespread praise for his pace, strength, aerial dominance and composure on the ball.

In 2021, Liverpool secured his services in a deal worth around £36 million.

At Anfield, Konate developed into one of the Premier League's most reliable defenders.

Across 183 appearances for the Reds, he played a crucial role in helping the club win the Premier League title in 2025, the FA Cup in 2022, two EFL Cups, the FA Community Shield and several other domestic honours.

He also featured prominently in Liverpool’s campaigns in the UEFA Champions League and other European competitions.

On the international stage, Konate has become an important figure for France.

Having represented his country at various youth levels, he made his senior debut in 2022 and was part of the French squad that reached the final of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar later that year.

He has since established himself as one of the key defensive options for Les Bleus and is currently representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While Konate is not known for collecting individual awards, at 27 years old, he enters what many consider the prime years of his career.

His acquisition represents a key piece in Real Madrid’s defensive reconstruction following the departures of Dani Carvajal and David Alaba.
