US President Donald Trump has drawn widespread attention after making a remark about rapper Nicki Minaj’s appearance during a Republican campaign rally in Michigan, where the Trinidadian-born star publicly reaffirmed her support for his leadership ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.

Trump made the comments on Sunday, October 25, at McMorran Place in Port Huron, where he was campaigning for Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers and gubernatorial candidate John James.

Referring to Minaj, Trump remarked that he had seen “one hell of a beautiful” backside, adding that it was “hard to miss”.

He then invited the rapper to stand before the crowd, prompting cheers from supporters.

“I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki,” Trump said, before returning to his speech.

He later praised her appearance again, describing her as a special and intelligent person.

Minaj, 43, subsequently joined Trump on stage, where she delivered a strong endorsement of the president and urged Michigan voters to support Republican candidates.

“I am so honoured to be working with this president. He represents resilience,” she told the crowd, adding that Trump had changed the country's political atmosphere and given Americans a brighter future to anticipate.

She also promised to continue supporting him, saying she would back him again if he ran for president.

However, the US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment bars Trump from being elected to a third presidential term.

According to MLive and Fox News, Minaj’s appearance formed part of Republican efforts to mobilise voters in two closely watched Michigan races ahead of the midterm elections.

The rapper’s appearance alongside Trump followed a video shared by White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, who interviewed her aboard Air Force One while they travelled to Michigan.

During the exchange, Minaj praised Trump’s economic policies, business experience and work ethic.

Cheung subsequently joked on X that the administration might have found its next White House press secretary.

The suggestion attracted attention online, but no official appointment has been announced.

The video appeared to be a playful exchange rather than confirmation of a government position.

Minaj’s support marks a notable development in her political journey.

In 2020, she criticised the Trump administration's immigration policies, particularly the separation of migrant children from their parents at the US border.

The Michigan rally also featured Trump’s attacks on Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, whom he portrayed as a national security threat.

El-Sayed has rejected allegations questioning his loyalty to the United States.
