The 35th edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) officially came to life on Sunday night in Rabat, Morocco, with a breathtaking opening ceremony that blended music, movement, culture, and symbolism.

Held at the iconic Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the event set an inspiring tone for a month-long celebration of African football and unity.

Played out before a sold-out crowd and broadcast to millions of viewers worldwide, the ceremony took place moments before host nation Morocco faced Comoros in the tournament’s opening match.

The spectacle served as a powerful reminder that AFCON is not only a football competition, but also a vibrant cultural showcase that highlights Africa’s diversity, heritage, and shared identity.

The ceremony began with a calm yet evocative musical introduction that fused traditional African rhythms with distinctive Moroccan sounds.

As the stadium lights illuminated the pitch, performers moved in carefully choreographed formations across a field transformed by colour and light.

Their movements reflected the rhythm of the continent and the long-standing heritage of African football.

At the heart of the performance, a central figure carrying a football-shaped map of Africa symbolised unity across the continent.

This powerful image reinforced AFCON’s message of togetherness, bringing nations and cultures together through sport. Amazigh-inspired music played prominently throughout the ceremony, underscoring Morocco’s cultural identity and its deep historical roots.

The visual elements of the ceremony were equally striking. Stunning projections inspired by Morocco’s famous zellige mosaic patterns and artisanal craftsmanship lit up the stadium.

Giant screens showcased scenes of everyday Moroccan life, education, breathtaking landscapes, and iconic cities such as Fez, Casablanca, and Marrakech.

These visuals offered the global audience a glimpse into Morocco’s rich cultural fabric and modern vibrancy.

One of the most emotional highlights of the night came with a rendition of Allah Ya Moulana, a timeless song made famous by legendary Moroccan group Nass El Ghiwane.

Global stars including French Montana, Davido, L’Artiste, and Jaylann brought an uplifting atmosphere to the stadium, blending African and global sounds. Their performances not only energized fans inside the venue but also resonated with viewers around the world, reinforcing AFCON’s growing global appeal.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe addressed the audience, opening his speech with the greeting “Assalamu Alaikum.”

He expressed gratitude to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, the Moroccan government and people, and the President of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Fouzi Lekjaa, for their dedication and commitment in hosting the tournament.

Motsepe praised Morocco’s passion for football and its outstanding preparations, officially declaring the competition open in the presence of FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The attendance of Infantino highlighted the tournament’s importance on the global football stage.

The presence of Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, who officially inaugurated the competition alongside Motsepe and Infantino, added significant ceremonial weight to the evening.

Also in attendance was Comoros President Azali Assoumani, underlining the continental significance of the event and the unity that AFCON represents.

As fireworks lit up the Rabat sky and the stadium erupted in cheers, AFCON 2025 was formally launched—not merely as a football tournament, but as a celebration of African culture, pride, and unity.
