PHOTOS: Late Cunha rocket sends Carrick’s Man Utd to shock League leaders Arsenal

Matheus Cunha struck a sensational late winner as Manchester United claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates, dealing a significant blow to the Gunners’ grip on the Premier League title race.

The substitute’s stunning 87th-minute effort capped a remarkable night for Michael Carrick’s side and reduced Arsenal’s lead at the top to just four points.

Cunha, introduced from the bench, curled an unstoppable shot into the far corner from 25 yards, silencing the home crowd just minutes after Arsenal had fought their way back into the contest.

Mikel Merino had appeared to rescue a point for the hosts in the 84th minute, poking the ball over the line from close range after Bukayo Saka’s corner caused chaos in the United area.

The match had swung repeatedly before Cunha’s decisive intervention.

Arsenal took the lead early on when Martin Odegaard’s cross-shot was diverted into his own net by Lisandro Martinez, giving David Raya little chance. 

However, the hosts failed to build on their advantage and were punished for a costly mistake.

A loose pass from Martin Zubimendi allowed Bryan Mbeumo to race clear and finish confidently to bring United level.

Arsenal struggled to regain control after conceding and were rocked again before the break when Patrick Dorgu unleashed a superb strike that crashed in off the crossbar to put United ahead.

The goal underlined the visitors’ growing confidence under Carrick, who is enjoying an impressive start to life in the dugout following last weekend’s derby victory over Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta attempted to shift the momentum with a quadruple substitution before the hour mark, but Arsenal continued to look vulnerable, particularly when defending transitions and set pieces.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Merino bundled home for yet another set-piece goal, briefly lifting the Emirates into life.

Yet just as Arsenal sensed a late winner of their own, Cunha delivered the decisive moment.

His brilliant strike sparked wild celebrations among the travelling supporters and capped a memorable night for United.

The result leaves Arsenal without a win in three league matches following draws against Nottingham Forest and Liverpool, while Manchester United’s resurgence continues as they strengthen their push for a top-four, Champions League finish.
