PHOTOS: Hamano strike seals Japan’s Asian Cup triumph over Australia
AFC Women's Asian Cup Final saw Japan narrowly defeat hosts Australia 1–0 to secure their third title in four editions, further cementing their dominance in Asian women’s football.
The decisive moment came early in the match when Maika Hamano produced a stunning long-range strike in the 17th minute, sending the ball into the top corner and ultimately proving to be the match-winner.
Played in front of a record-breaking crowd of 74,357 fans at Stadium Australia, the final showcased the growing popularity of the women’s game.
The electric atmosphere reflected a landmark tournament that drew more than 350,000 spectators overall—nearly six times the attendance recorded at the 2010 edition in China.
The final itself also set a new single-match attendance record in the competition’s history.
Japan’s victory echoed their previous triumphs over Australia in the 2014 and 2018 finals, both of which also ended 1–0.
Throughout the tournament, Japan demonstrated exceptional form, remaining unbeaten and displaying a balanced style of play characterized by fluid attacking movements and disciplined defending.
They scored an impressive 29 goals while conceding just once in six matches, underlining their status as Asia’s top-ranked team.
Australia began the final brightly, creating early opportunities through key players like Caitlin Foord and Mary Fowler. However, missed chances proved costly.
Foord failed to convert a clear opportunity in the 11th minute and later squandered additional chances, allowing Japan to capitalize.
Japan continued to threaten after the break, with Riko Ueki coming close on multiple occasions.
Despite mounting pressure from Australia late in the game, including a near-equalizer from Alanna Kennedy in the 88th minute, Japan’s defense held firm to secure the victory.
The tournament also served as qualification for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with Japan, Australia, South Korea, China, North Korea, and the Philippines all earning their spots.
Japan’s triumph also reinforced their dominance in Asian football.
