Pépé brace sends Ivory Coast into historic World Cup knockout stage

Ivory Coast secured a historic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout rounds after defeating Curaçao 2-0 in their final Group E match at Philadelphia Stadium on Thursday night.

A brilliant brace from Nicolas Pépé ensured the Elephants finished second in the group and advanced beyond the World Cup group stage for the first time in the nation’s history.

Knowing that a draw would be enough to progress, Emerse Faé’s side approached the match with confidence and determination.

They wasted little time asserting their authority, taking the lead in just the seventh minute.

Young winger Yan Diomande capitalized on a defensive mistake inside the Curaçao penalty area before cutting the ball back for Pépé, who calmly tapped home from close range.

The early breakthrough settled the Ivorians, but Curaçao refused to surrender.

Making their World Cup debut, the Caribbean side showed plenty of spirit and ambition.

Captain Leandro Bacuna and former Manchester United winger Tahith Chong both threatened the Ivory Coast goal during the first half, while goalkeeper Yahia Fofana remained alert whenever called upon.

Despite Curaçao’s determination, Ivory Coast maintained control for large periods of the contest.

Midfield leaders Franck Kessié and Ibrahim Sangaré dictated the tempo, while Diomande continued to trouble the opposition defense with his pace and creativity.

By halftime, the Elephants held a deserved 1-0 advantage and were on course for a place in the Round of 32.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Curaçao pushing forward in search of an equalizer and Ivory Coast looking dangerous on the counterattack.

Their decisive moment arrived in the 64th minute.

Sangaré produced a perfectly weighted through ball that split the defense and released Pépé into space.

The experienced winger raced clear before firing an unstoppable finish into the top corner, doubling Ivory Coast’s lead and effectively ending the contest.

Pépé’s two-goal performance earned him Player of the Match honors and highlighted his importance to the national team on football’s biggest stage.

The victory was also built on a disciplined team display, with Ivory Coast limiting Curaçao to few clear opportunities and finishing with a superior expected goals (xG) tally of 1.30 compared to Curaçao’s 0.47.

The result completed an impressive group-stage campaign for the Elephants.

They opened with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador thanks to a late winner from Amad Diallo before narrowly losing 2-1 to Germany after leading for much of the match.

Their win against Curaçao secured seven points and guaranteed progression.

For Curaçao, the defeat marked the end of a memorable debut World Cup campaign.

Although they finished bottom of the group with one point, they made history by scoring their first World Cup goal and earning their first point in the competition.

Led by Emerse Faé and inspired by the form of Nicolas Pépé, the African giants have written a new chapter in their football history.
