Mbappé double seals Real Madrid reclaim LaLiga table top

Real Madrid climbed to the top of the LaLiga table with a composed 2–0 victory over Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica, as Kylian Mbappé’s second-half brace proved decisive.

The defeat marked back-to-back league losses for Villarreal for the first time since March and extended a difficult run that has now seen them lose three consecutive matches in all competitions.

The opening stages were scrappy and low on quality, with referee César Soto Grado’s decision not to award Villarreal an early penalty setting the tone for a fiercely contested first half.

Clear chances were rare, as both sides cancelled each other out in midfield.

Villarreal found some joy down the flanks through Tajon Buchanan and Alberto Moleiro, but their approach play lacked a cutting edge, while Real Madrid’s star attackers Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé were kept quiet by disciplined man-to-man defending from the hosts.

The first shot on target did not arrive until the 20th minute, when Arda Güler produced a fine individual effort that forced a save from Luiz Júnior.

The young midfielder was a rare bright spark in a half dominated by physical battles rather than flowing football.

Vinícius went close just before the break with a left-footed strike that flashed narrowly wide, while Pape Gueye responded at the other end with a similar effort that missed the target, bringing a cagey opening period to a close.

Real Madrid emerged with greater purpose after half-time and took the lead just two minutes into the second half.

Mbappé reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the area and fired home with his first touch in the Villarreal box, registering his fourth goal in three appearances.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in Madrid’s favour, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side growing in confidence and control.

Villarreal briefly threatened an equaliser through a cleverly worked free-kick involving Dani Parejo and Gerard Moreno, but clear chances remained limited as the match entered its closing stages.

In stoppage time, Mbappé’s blistering pace drew a foul from Alfonso Pedraza inside the penalty area, and the French forward calmly converted the resulting spot-kick with a Panenka to seal the result.

The win sends Real Madrid top of the table, while Villarreal slip below Atlético Madrid. It also puts pressure on Barcelona, who must win their upcoming fixture to reclaim first place.
