Marc Cucurella joins Real Madrid on six-year deal

Real Madrid have strengthened their defensive ranks with the signing of Spanish international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million.

The 27-year-old left-back has signed a six-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu after Los Blancos agreed an initial fee of £47.5 million, with a further £4.3 million in performance-related add-ons.

The move represents a significant statement by new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who identified Cucurella as a priority target ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Cucurella departs Chelsea after four successful seasons at Stamford Bridge, where he made 163 appearances across all competitions.

During his time in west London, he helped the Blues win the UEFA Europa Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, establishing himself as one of the Premier League's most consistent full-backs.

His departure is considered a setback for incoming Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who is already facing the challenge of rebuilding a squad short on experienced players.

Despite interest from Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Manchester City, Cucurella made it clear that Real Madrid was his preferred destination.

The defender joins a Real Madrid side that has already enjoyed an active transfer window, with the arrivals of Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva as Mourinho begins shaping his squad for a new era.

Born on July 22, 1998, in Alella, Spain, Cucurella came through the renowned La Masia academy at Barcelona before progressing through the ranks.

He later impressed at SD Eibar and Getafe, where his energetic displays earned him a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021.

His outstanding debut Premier League season saw him named Brighton's Player of the Year before Chelsea secured his signature in a £63 million transfer in 2022.

On the international stage, Cucurella has become a key figure for Spain.

He was part of the Spanish squad that won the UEFA European Championship in 2024, playing a crucial role throughout the tournament.

Cucurela has also represented Spain at youth levels, winning the UEFA European Under-21 Championship and earning recognition as one of the country's leading defenders.

Throughout his career, Cucurella’s honours include the UEFA European Championship with Spain, the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League with Chelsea.
