Manchester City clinch 2026 EFL Cup with O'Reilly brace against Arsenal

Manchester City claimed the 2026 EFL Cup title with a commanding 2–0 victory over Arsenal at Wembley Stadium, as young star Nico O'Reilly delivered a match-winning performance with two second-half goals.

The final began with Arsenal on the front foot, showing early intent and energy.

Within the opening minutes, they came close to breaking the deadlock, forcing City goalkeeper James Trafford into an impressive triple save.

Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz were particularly lively, but their finishing lacked the clinical edge needed on such a big stage.

As the first half progressed, City gradually settled into their rhythm.

Pep Guardiola’s side began to dominate possession, controlling the tempo through the midfield led by Rodri and Bernardo Silva.

However, despite their growing control, clear-cut chances remained limited, and the match went into the break goalless.

The game changed dramatically in the second half. City raised their intensity and began to exploit spaces in Arsenal’s defense.

The breakthrough came in the 60th minute when a high cross from Rayan Cherki slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, allowing O’Reilly to head home from close range.

Just four minutes later, City doubled their advantage. A well-worked move involving Rodri and Matheus Nunes resulted in a precise cross into the box, where O’Reilly once again rose above the defense to power in his second header of the match.

Arsenal struggled to respond after conceding twice in quick succession. Although they showed flashes of urgency, their attacking play lacked creativity and precision.

They came close to scoring when Riccardo Calafiori struck the post and later when Gabriel Jesus hit the crossbar, but luck was not on their side.

In the end, City’s experience and composure proved decisive. Guardiola’s men saw out the game comfortably, securing the first major trophy of the season.

The victory marks Guardiola’s fifth EFL Cup triumph, further cementing his legacy in English football.

For Arsenal, it was a disappointing performance on a big occasion.

Despite a strong start, they failed to maintain momentum and ultimately fell short, ending their unbeaten run and missing out on early-season silverware.
