Iraola appointed Liverpool head coach on two-year deal

Liverpool have appointed Andoni Iraola as their new head coach on a two-year contract, confirming the Spaniard as the successor to Arne Slot, who was dismissed just one year after guiding the club to the Premier League title.

The former Bournemouth manager emerges as Liverpool’s preferred choice following a swift recruitment process led by sporting director Richard Hughes.

Iraola, who previously worked under Hughes at Bournemouth, quickly became the leading candidate after Slot’s departure on 30 May.

The club is understood to have considered other options, but Iraola was the only candidate formally interviewed, underlining Liverpool’s strong confidence in his suitability for the role.

Liverpool believe they have secured one of the most highly regarded young managers in European football.

The 43-year-old has earned widespread praise for his tactical identity, intensity, and ability to develop players.

His work at Bournemouth, particularly during the 2025/26 Premier League season, saw the club enjoy an 18-game unbeaten run, ultimately securing a sixth-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Remarkably, Bournemouth ended the campaign just three points behind Liverpool in the league table.

Iraola expressed his excitement at taking charge of the Anfield club, describing Liverpool as “one of the biggest clubs in the world” and highlighting the opportunity to work with elite players and compete for major trophies.

He added that the atmosphere, supporters, and tradition of the club made the decision an easy one, saying he is eager to become “one of the fans” and build a strong connection with the Liverpool faithful.

Liverpool’s hierarchy are also convinced that Iraola’s high-intensity, front-foot style of play aligns with the club’s footballing identity.

His approach is expected to bring renewed aggression and structure both in and out of possession, with a strong emphasis on pressing and quick transitions.

Football analysts have widely described Iraola as one of the most exciting managerial appointments in recent years.

His success at Bournemouth has been credited with transforming the club’s playing style and creating a strong bond with supporters, even during difficult periods.

His ability to instil a clear identity and improve player performance has been seen as a key factor in Liverpool’s decision.

However, some pundits have raised questions about whether his high-intensity system can be sustained at a club competing across multiple competitions every season.

Concerns have also been voiced about the step up in pressure from Bournemouth to one of the world’s most demanding football environments.

Despite these questions, Liverpool are confident Iraola is the right long-term appointment to restore consistency and competitiveness at the highest level.

The club views him as a manager capable of leading a new era at Anfield, built on energy, tactical discipline, and a strong emotional connection with supporters.
