European football star takes aim at President Trump over World Cup

Off-field controversies continue to swirl around this summer’s World Cup, threatening to distract from the on-pitch spectacle.

One of the loudest talking points has come from Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Leon Goretzka, who delivered a pointed response to U.S. President Donald Trump amid rising political tensions surrounding the tournament.

The World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, has faced heightened scrutiny during Trump’s second term in office.

Trump recently sparked controversy by labeling Europe as “decaying” and warning that the continent would become “much weaker” due to its immigration policies.

Speaking to Politico in September, Trump claimed Europe was seeing large numbers of migrants arriving from regions including the Middle East and Africa, alleging—without evidence—that some were coming from prisons.

Goretzka responded by suggesting that Trump’s rhetoric has had the opposite of its intended effect.

Rather than discouraging Europe, the 30-year-old midfielder said it has strengthened a shared continental identity among players.

“Of course, I’m aware of the political debates,” Goretzka told German publication Die Zeit.

“I still expect it to be a great tournament. It will promote football there and show how many people want an exciting game.

Donald Trump makes us feel not only German, but also European.”

Goretzka has previously shown a willingness to speak out on political and social issues.

During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he strongly criticized comments made by the host nation’s ambassador regarding homosexuality, calling them “oppressive” and reflective of attitudes “from a different millennium.”

Despite acknowledging the risks of speaking publicly, Goretzka remained firm in his stance.

“When you speak out as an athlete, you take a risk,” he said. “You have to win. Otherwise, your commitment backfires or is deliberately misunderstood.”

On the sporting front, Goretzka is confident Europe will reassert its dominance at the World Cup.

While Argentina are the reigning champions, he believes European teams remain the benchmark.

“In the most important game in the world, we are still ahead of all other continents,” Goretzka insisted. “Far from being left behind, Europe will show everyone what it’s made of on the pitch.”

Europe’s dominance has been evident historically. Since Brazil’s triumph in 2002, 15 of the 20 World Cup semifinalists have come from Europe.

However, the 2022 tournament saw a shift, with Argentina lifting the trophy and Morocco making a historic semifinal run after eliminating Spain and Portugal.

Political tensions have also led to discussions in Germany about a potential World Cup boycott.

German Football Association vice president Oke Göttlich suggested that such talks should at least take place.

Federation president Bernd Neuendorf, however, dismissed the idea, calling the debate ill-timed and misguided.

For now, the focus remains on whether Europe can back up Goretzka’s bold words where it matters most—on the pitch.
