Cricket: Rwanda’s Utagushimaninde makes global history with T20I Century at 15
Rwanda’s teenage sensation, Fanny Utagushimaninde, has etched her name in cricketing history by becoming the youngest woman to score a T20I century and the first to hit a hundred on debut.
At just 15 years and 223 days, she blasted an unbeaten 111 off 65 balls against Ghana in the Nigeria Invitational Women’s T20I Tournament in Lagos, steering Rwanda to a commanding 210 for 3.
The innings broke multiple records. Utagushimaninde surpassed Australia’s Karen Rolton, who had scored 96 not out on T20I debut against England in 2005, and overtook Uganda’s Prosscovia Alako, the previous youngest centurion at 16 years and 233 days.
Her knock not only sets a new benchmark for debutants but also signals Rwanda’s rise as a force in African women’s cricket.
Utagushimaninde’s innings was a display of power, timing, and maturity, dominating Ghana’s bowling attack from the outset.
She mixed aggressive strokeplay with smart running between the wickets, keeping the scoreboard ticking and never letting the opposition gain momentum.
Rwanda’s total was further bolstered by Merveille Uwase, who contributed 32 not out off 19 balls, complementing Utagushimaninde’s brilliance.
Ghana, in reply, managed just 88 for 8 in 20 overs, handing Rwanda a comprehensive 122-run victory.
This record-breaking century is a milestone not just for Utagushimaninde but for Rwanda’s women’s cricket development.
It reflects the results of sustained efforts by the Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA), which has invested heavily in youth programs, school initiatives, regional academies, and national training camps to nurture young talent and build a competitive national side.
The knock serves as an inspiration for aspiring female cricketers across Rwanda, proving that structured training, mentorship, and exposure to international tournaments can produce world-class performances.
Utagushimaninde’s feat also boosts Rwanda’s visibility in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings and is likely to attract more sponsorships, development support, and international fixtures.
With such emerging talent, Rwanda is poised to become a hub for women’s cricket in East Africa, and Utagushimaninde’s historic century will be remembered as a landmark moment that put the nation firmly on the global women’s cricket map.
