Chelsea edge Leeds 1-0 to reach FA Cup final, face Manchester City

Chelsea booked their place in the FA Cup final after edging past Leeds United 1–0 in a tightly contested semi-final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening.

A first-half header from Enzo Fernández on 23 minutes proved decisive, as the Blues held firm under late pressure to secure a hard-fought victory and keep their hopes of silverware alive in what has otherwise been a difficult season.

Chelsea made a bright start and gradually took control of possession, but Leeds were the first to threaten, with Brenden Aaronson forcing an early save from goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.

However, it was Chelsea who struck in the 23rd minute. After winning the ball high up the pitch, Pedro Neto delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, where Fernández rose unmarked to power a header into the bottom corner.

The goal shifted momentum in Chelsea’s favour, and they came close to doubling their lead shortly after, with João Pedro striking the post.

Despite creating fewer clear chances overall, the London side went into the break with a 1–0 advantage.

Leeds responded strongly in the second half, producing a more aggressive attacking display.

Substitute Anton Stach and Dominic Calvert-Lewin both tested Sánchez early on, as the Yorkshire side pushed for an equaliser.

Their expected goals (xG) tally of 0.89 highlighted their improved threat compared to Chelsea’s 0.33, but they struggled to convert opportunities into goals.

Chelsea, meanwhile, relied on defensive discipline and occasional counter-attacks. Chances fell to João Pedro and Alejandro Garnacho, but neither could extend the lead.

As the match entered its final stages, Leeds continued to press, with Ao Tanaka and Stach both sending efforts narrowly wide.

In a tense period of added time, Leeds threw everything forward, including goalkeeper Lucas Perri for a late set-piece.

However, Chelsea’s defence held firm, with Sánchez making a crucial intervention to deny a final opportunity.

The result sends Chelsea into their 16th FA Cup final, underlining their strong history in the competition.

The Blues have previously lifted the trophy eight times (1970, 1997, 2000, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, and 2018), making them one of the most successful clubs in FA Cup history.

They have also finished as runners-up on several occasions, including their most recent final appearance in 2022.

For Leeds, the defeat marks the end of an impressive cup run, their best since 1987, falling just one step short of a return to the final for the first time in over five decades.

Chelsea will now face Manchester City in the final, as they look to salvage their season with a major domestic trophy.
