Basketball: Espoir BBC relegated from Rwanda’s Basketball League
Espoir BBC has been relegated to Rwanda’s Second Division after spending 50 years in the top Basketball League and producing many of the country’s greatest players.
The decision was confirmed during FERWABA’s General Assembly on December 6, 2025, after the team finished last in the 2025 season.
The news shocked supporters of the historic Nyamirambo-based club, which has long been a powerhouse in Rwandan basketball.
Over the years, Espoir nurtured prominent players such as Gisembe, Ruzindana, Nkuba, and Me. Munyengabo Henry Pierre before the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and later stars like Mugabe Aristide, Arsène, Mushumba Didier, Lionel, Bienvenu, Nshobozwabyosenumukiza Jean Jacques Wilson, Kaje Elie, and Nshyaka Olivier.
The club also won league titles in 1999, 2004, 2011–12, 2012–13, 2013–14, and 2014–15.
