AFCON 2025 final aftermath sees Hakimi and Sarr suspended

The final of the Africa Cup of Nations was eventful to say the least, with Senegal temporarily leaving the pitch before winning the trophy.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have handed out a number of suspensions after the events that took place in the Africa Cup of Nations final.

After Morocco were awarded a penalty deep in stoppage time during the showpiece, Senegal walked off the pitch in protest before later coming back on.

Brahim Diaz eventually took the penalty 14 minutes after it was initially awarded, but he missed his attempted Panenka, while Pape Gueye won the trophy for Senegal in extra time.

The CAF have suspended Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw for five games and fined him $100,000 (£72,000) for “Unsporting conduct” after telling his players to leave the field, while Ismaila Sarr and Iliman Ndiaye received two-game bans for unsporting behaviour towards the referee.

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi also received a two-match ban, one of which is suspended for a year, for trying to remove Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy's towel in the rainy conditions, while Ismael Saibari was handed a three-game ban and a $100,000 fine for the same reason.

Morocco were fined $200,000 (£144,000) as well for the conduct of the ball boys during the final, the behaviour of their players, the use of lasers by supporters and for staff entering the Video Assistant Review area.
