Photos: Gorilla FC open season with convincing win over AS Muhanga

Gorilla FC began their 2025/26 Rwandan Premier League campaign in style with a commanding 2-0 victory over league newcomers AS Muhanga at the Kigali Pele Stadium on Friday.

The match marked a strong start for Gorilla FC, who looked composed and in control for most of the game, especially in the second half.

Despite a cagey opening 45 minutes, where both sides created chances but failed to convert, it was clear that the hosts were slowly growing into the match.

AS Muhanga, making their return to the top flight, showed early resilience and energy but struggled to maintain their defensive shape as the game wore on.

Their lack of experience at this level began to show under the increasing pressure from Gorilla FC.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 67th minute. A well-executed build-up play saw midfielder Moussa Omar swing in a pinpoint cross from the right flank, which was met by Nduwimana Frank.

Rising above his marker, Frank guided a precise header into the back of the net, sending the home fans into celebration.

With momentum firmly in their favor, Gorilla FC continued to dominate possession and pushed for a second goal.

Their persistence paid off in the 84th minute when Mudeyi Mussa made a brilliant solo run, weaving through the AS Muhanga defense before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to double the lead.

The result was never in doubt from that point on, and Gorilla FC saw out the remaining minutes with confidence and control.

Their solid performance not only secured all three points but also positioned them at the top of the league standings after the first round of fixtures.

For AS Muhanga, it was a tough introduction to life in the Premier League, but they showed enough spirit in the first half to suggest they could be competitive as the season progresses.

Gorilla FC, meanwhile, will take plenty of positives from their performance as they look to build momentum early in the season and potentially challenge for top honors.
