Hakim Sahabo joins AEK Athens on a three-year deal
Rwandan midfielder Hakim Sahabo has sealed a high-profile move to Greek giants AEK Athens, completing his transfer from Standard Liège in a deal that sets a new benchmark for Rwandan football.
AEK confirmed that the agreement includes a base fee of €1.5 million, which could rise beyond €2 million through performance-related bonuses.
Standard Liège will also benefit from a 10 percent sell-on clause should the player move again in the future.
Sahabo has committed his future to the club by signing a contract that runs until the summer of 2029.
The 20-year-old makes the switch after just over a year in Belgium, where he joined Standard Liège in January 2024 and featured 14 times this season.
His steady rise at club level has been matched on the international stage, earning him nine caps with the Rwanda national team.
A move to Rangers was previously explored but failed to materialize after negotiations stalled.
AEK Athens, however, acted decisively to secure the midfielder, offering him a new platform to develop in the Greek Super League and compete at a higher level.
Sahabo’s transfer not only marks a significant step in his personal career but also represents a historic moment for Rwandan football, underlining the growing market value of the country’s emerging talents.
