Why Manchester United signed Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans

Manchester United completed the signing of Belgium international Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a deal worth £36 million, strengthening Michael Carrick's midfield ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The 29-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, becoming United’s second midfield signing of the summer following the arrival of Brazilian international Andrey Santos from Chelsea.

His recruitment underlines the club’s determination to build a squad capable of competing for major honours domestically and in Europe after returning to the UEFA Champions League.

Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, Tielemans expressed his excitement at joining one of England’s biggest clubs.

“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United. Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football”, he said.

“I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game, but it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear, and we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years”.

Tielemans arrives after three impressive seasons at Aston Villa, where he joined on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023.

During his time at Villa Park, he made 134 appearances, scored 10 goals, and established himself as one of the Premier League’s most influential midfielders.

He played a vital role in Villa’s recent success, helping the club qualify for the UEFA Champions League twice, reach the competition’s quarter-finals, and lift the UEFA Europa League last season under Unai Emery.

Tielemans also scored the opening goal in the Europa League final victory over Freiburg, adding another memorable moment to his impressive collection of big-match performances.

Internationally, the Belgian captain also impressed at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making five appearances and scoring twice in Belgium’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal in the Round of 32.

Manchester United believe they are signing a midfielder who combines experience, creativity and leadership.

Tielemans has built a reputation as one of the Premier League’s finest progressive passers, capable of controlling matches, breaking opposition lines with precise distribution and contributing defensively.

Statistics from recent seasons highlight his importance in possession, with the Belgian ranking among the league’s best midfielders for progressive and line-breaking passes.

Under Emery, he also developed into a stronger defensive player, recording some of the highest tackle success and duel-winning numbers of his Premier League career.

His arrival gives Carrick additional quality alongside Andrey Santos and Kobbie Mainoo, while allowing captain Bruno Fernandes to continue operating in a more advanced attacking role.

Before joining Villa, Tielemans enjoyed a successful spell at Leicester City, where he famously scored the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final and also lifted the Community Shield.

Despite completing two midfield signings already, Manchester United expected to remain active in the transfer market.

The club continue to monitor Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba as they seek another athletic option in midfield, while reinforcements at left-back and on the left wing are also being considered before the transfer window closes.
