Rwanda heads to FIFA congress as Shema leads FERWAFA delegation in Vancouver

Rwanda is set to take part in one of the most significant gatherings in global football as the leadership of the FIFA prepares for the 76th FIFA Congress, scheduled to take place on April 30 in Vancouver.

The country’s delegation will be led by Fabrice Shema, President of the FERWAFA, alongside First Vice President Claudine Gasarabwe and Secretary General Bonnie Mugabe.

The FIFA Congress is the highest decision-making body in world football, bringing together representatives from all 211 Member Associations.

It serves as a platform where key decisions shaping the future of the sport are discussed and approved.

Among the core items on this year’s agenda are governance reforms, financial transparency, development funding, competition structures, and broader strategic priorities aimed at expanding football globally.

Rwanda’s participation at this level underscores its growing role and visibility within international football circles.

In recent years, FERWAFA has made deliberate efforts to align its structures with global standards, improve domestic competitions, and invest in grassroots football development.

Attending the Congress allows the Rwandan delegation to engage directly with global football leaders, exchange ideas, and advocate for initiatives that can accelerate the sport’s growth within the country.

Under the leadership of Fabrice Shema, Rwanda has increasingly positioned itself as an active contributor in FIFA programs, particularly those focused on infrastructure development, youth training, and capacity building for coaches and administrators.

The Congress provides an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and secure continued support through FIFA’s development programs, which remain crucial for emerging football nations.

The inclusion of Claudine Gasarabwe in the delegation highlights Rwanda’s commitment to gender inclusion and diversity in sports leadership.

Her presence reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that women play a meaningful role in decision-making processes at both national and international levels.

Meanwhile, Secretary General Bonnie Mugabe’s participation reinforces the importance of strong administrative leadership in navigating the complexities of modern football governance.

Beyond formal discussions, the Congress also offers valuable networking opportunities, enabling Rwanda to build relationships with other football associations, confederations, and stakeholders.

Such engagements can open doors for international collaborations, friendly matches, training exchanges, and investment in football infrastructure.

As the global football community gathers in Vancouver, Rwanda’s presence signals not only participation but ambition.

The country continues to position itself as a serious stakeholder in the development of the sport, both within Africa and on the world stage.

The outcomes of the 76th FIFA Congress are expected to shape policies and strategies that will influence football for years to come, and Rwanda’s involvement ensures it remains part of that important conversation.
