Ruben Amorim close to two-year AC Milan deal

Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly on the verge of becoming the new head coach of AC Milan, marking a swift return to management just months after his departure from Manchester United.

According to reports from Italy, Amorim has reached a full agreement with the Serie A giants and is expected to sign a two-year contract with an option for a further season.

The appointment would not only give Milan one of Europe’s most highly regarded young coaches but would also save Manchester United millions of pounds in compensation payments following his dismissal in January.

At 41 years old, Amorim has already built an impressive reputation both as a player and as a coach.

Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Amorim enjoyed a successful playing career as a versatile midfielder.

He spent the majority of his professional career with Portuguese powerhouse Benfica, where he won three Primeira Liga titles, one Portuguese League Cup, and a Portuguese Super Cup.

Amorim also represented Portugal at international level, earning 14 senior caps and featuring in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

After retiring from playing in 2017, Amorim quickly transitioned into coaching.

His managerial journey began with Portuguese lower-division side Casa Pia before he moved to Braga’s reserve team.

His impressive work earned him promotion to Braga’s first team, where he won the Portuguese League Cup in 2020.

That success attracted the attention of Sporting CP, who appointed him as head coach later that year.

Amorim transformed Sporting into one of Europe’s most exciting teams, leading the club to its first Portuguese league title in 19 years during the 2020-21 season.

He later added another Primeira Liga title, multiple domestic trophies and several memorable European performances, establishing himself as one of football’s brightest tactical minds.

Amorim is widely admired for his modern and flexible tactical philosophy.

His preferred system is a 3-4-3 formation, built on aggressive pressing, quick transitions, positional discipline, and intelligent ball circulation.

His teams are known for maintaining defensive solidity while creating attacking overloads through adventurous wing-backs and dynamic forward movements.

The Portuguese coach places significant emphasis on youth development and has consistently promoted academy talents throughout his managerial career.

Several young players flourished under his guidance at Sporting, earning moves to Europe’s top leagues.

Should the move to AC Milan be completed, Amorim will inherit one of football’s most historic clubs and face the challenge of restoring the Rossoneri to the summit of Italian and European football.

Interestingly, he could reunite with his former club Manchester United sooner than expected, with Milan scheduled to face the English side in a pre-season fixture in Poland on August 15.
