Ratcliffe considers Man Utd exit amid mounting fan frustration
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is facing growing criticism from supporters as the club’s poor performances continue to fuel frustration over the leadership and direction of the Old Trafford side.
The latest wave of discontent emerged following United’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31, 2026, which extended their winless run to nine matches across all competitions.
Despite Ratcliffe’s absence from the London fixture, travelling United supporters directed their anger towards the club’s hierarchy, with the British billionaire, the Glazer family, chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox among those facing criticism.
According to reports, supporters expressed their dissatisfaction through chants demanding that the club’s owners sell Manchester United and leave, reflecting growing frustration with the team’s performances and the decisions being made behind the scenes.
While manager Michael Carrick received encouragement from sections of the travelling support, the club’s leadership remained the main target of criticism.
Carrick also approached the supporters after the final whistle, acknowledging their continued backing despite another disappointing result.
Started brightly against Chelsea but failed to convert several opportunities before Morgan Rogers opened the scoring early in the second half.
Lisandro Martinez was subsequently sent off after a challenge on Wesley Fofana, allowing Cole Palmer to double Chelsea's advantage from the penalty spot.
The defeat left United provisionally 17th in the Premier League standings, just one point above the relegation zone, increasing pressure on a club that has struggled to rediscover its former consistency.
The criticism surrounding Ratcliffe comes amid wider questions about his management since acquiring a minority stake in Manchester United in February 2024.
Although the Glazer family retained majority ownership, Ratcliffe and his INEOS team were handed responsibility for football operations.
His restructuring programme, which included hundreds of job cuts, changes to spending and controversial decisions concerning staff and supporters, has attracted criticism from sections of the fanbase.
Growing tensions between Ratcliffe’s management and the Glazer family, citing a source close to the American owners who questioned the direction of the club under INEOS.
The source reportedly described the changes across several departments as inconsistent with the strategy Ratcliffe had previously outlined.
The situation has also revived questions about the club's ownership structure, which has remained a major source of frustration among supporters since the Glazer family completed its takeover in 2005.
In a previous interview, Ratcliffe acknowledged that he would not want to remain at Manchester United if the level of hostility directed towards the owners became unbearable, admitting that such treatment would make the experience unenjoyable.
Meanwhile, Carrick faces an increasingly difficult task to reverse United’s fortunes, with Roma and Aston Villa among their immediate opponents before a demanding trip to Liverpool.
