Premier League: Havertz ends Arsenal’s 14-year wait for an Anfield victory

Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, November 1, 2026, moving three points clear at the top of the Premier League table after Kai Havertz’s first-half goal proved decisive.

The Gunners ended their long wait for a Premier League victory at Anfield, recording their first win at the stadium since September 2012.

Result also brought Liverpool's five-match winning run in all competitions to an end.

Havertz scored the only goal of the encounter in the 16th minute, finishing from close range after Declan Rice delivered an excellent low cross across the Liverpool penalty area.

The move started when Martin Ødegaard capitalised on a loose pass from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Ball eventually reached Noni Madueke, who found Rice making an overlapping run before the England international delivered an inviting cross for Havertz to convert at the far post.

Arsenal started brightly and nearly doubled their advantage before Liverpool gradually grew into the contest.

The hosts created several promising opportunities but struggled to turn their attacking pressure into goals.

Florian Wirtz came particularly close to equalising in the 39th minute when his dangerous free-kick from a tight angle beat goalkeeper David Raya but struck the crossbar.

Liverpool missed another golden opportunity four minutes later when Alexis Mac Allister headed over from eight yards despite being completely unmarked in the Arsenal penalty area.

The Reds continued pressing after the interval, enjoying considerable possession as they searched for an equaliser.

Arsenal’s defensive organisation prevented the hosts from creating clear-cut opportunities.

Alexander Isak came close in the 56th minute after receiving a pass from Milos Kerkez, but his effort went over the crossbar.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola introduced Dominik Szoboszlai, Rio Ngumoha and Kostas Tsimikas in the second half in an attempt to increase his team's attacking threat.

Despite their changes and sustained pressure, Liverpool struggled to find a breakthrough.

Arsenal goalkeeper Raya remained largely untroubled, with the visitors maintaining their defensive discipline.

Arsenal also threatened to extend their advantage, particularly in the 73rd minute when Christos Tzolis forced an excellent save from Alisson with a low effort towards the bottom corner.

The Gunners managed the closing stages professionally, with Mikel Arteta introducing Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyökeres to help preserve the advantage.

Liverpool finished the match without registering a single shot on target, despite recording a higher expected goals figure of 1.15 compared with Arsenal’s 0.96.

Arsenal also marked 300th Premier League away win, placing them among only two clubs to reach that milestone, alongside Manchester United, who have recorded 328.

Both teams will now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, with Liverpool travelling to face Fenerbahçe while Arsenal visit Slavia Prague on Wednesday.
