PHOTOS: PSG beat Aston Villa 2-1 to retain UEFA Super Cup in Salzburg

Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup after beating Aston Villa 2-1 in a dramatic final at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Wednesday night.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for the Champions League winners in the 20th minute before Aston Villa teenager Brian Madjo equalised just before half-time.

Désiré Doué restored PSG’s lead in the 61st minute, sealing another European trophy for Luis Enrique’s side.

PSG started cautiously but gradually took control, with Kvaratskhelia providing the decisive moment.

 After Villa lost possession high up the pitch, Doué quickly found the Georgian winger, who took one touch before unleashing a powerful finish into the top corner.

The goal made Kvaratskhelia the first Georgian player to score in a UEFA Super Cup final and continued his outstanding run in European competition.

He has now been directly involved in 11 goals in his last nine UEFA matches, according to the match statistics.

Villa, however, refused to be overwhelmed.

Madjo came close several times before finally finding the breakthrough in the 45th minute.

John McGinn delivered a superb cross towards the far post and the 17-year-old showed impressive strength to beat Willian Pacho before finishing clinically.

Madjo, aged 17 years and 212 days, became the youngest player ever to score in the UEFA Super Cup, surpassing Patrick Kluivert’s previous record from 1996.

The Birmingham side continued to threaten after the interval, but PSG eventually found the winning goal.

Ousmane Dembélé, introduced at half-time, produced a brilliant through-ball for Doué, who ran into space on the right before curling a left-footed effort beyond Marco Bizot.

Villa pushed for another equaliser, with George Hemmings and substitute Alysson Edward both going close, but PSG’s defence held firm to secure the trophy.

The victory adds another chapter to PSG's rapidly developing European history.

Their first UEFA Super Cup appearance came in 1996, when they suffered a heavy 9-2 aggregate defeat against Juventus.

They returned to the competition in 2025 and defeated Tottenham on penalties after a 2-2 draw, becoming the first French club to lift the trophy.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, were competing in their second UEFA Super Cup.

Their only previous appearance came in 1982, when they defeated Barcelona 3-1 on aggregate after losing the first leg 1-0 before winning the return 3-0 after extra time.

The result also underlines the rich history of the competition.

Real Madrid remains the record winners with six Super Cup titles, followed by AC Milan and Barcelona with five each.

Liverpool have four, while Atlético Madrid have three.

Aston Villa’s 1982 triumph remains England’s club’s only Super Cup title apart from Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest among the English winners.
