Lamine Yamal makes La Liga history, surpasses Messi and Ronaldo milestones

Lamine Yamal delivered a landmark performance on Feb. 28, 2026, producing the first hat-trick of his professional career to lead FC Barcelona to a 4–1 victory over Villarreal CF.

The achievement etched his name into the record books, as he became the youngest player in the 21st century to score a hat-trick in La Liga.

At just 18 years and 230 days old, Yamal surpassed former Barcelona academy graduate Giovani dos Santos, whose record had stood since 2008.

Even more remarkably, Yamal became the first player aged 18 or younger to score a La Liga hat-trick in 59 years.

Only José Iraragorri and Pablo Pabón were younger when scoring hat-tricks in Spain’s top division, and those feats occurred in the 1930s.

Yamal’s three goals against Villarreal showcased his composure and technical brilliance.

He opened with a calm finish, added a spectacular strike into the top corner, and completed the treble with a precise effort inside the far post.

Beyond securing three vital points, the performance highlighted the extraordinary trajectory of a player widely considered one of football’s brightest young talents.

The hat-trick also carried broader historical significance. With those three goals, Yamal reached 101 career goal contributions for club and country—49 goals and 52 assists—before even turning 19.

His pace to the century mark eclipsed that of modern legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Yamal achieved 100 goal contributions at 18 years, seven months and 16 days, nearly three years earlier than Messi and more than three years ahead of Ronaldo at the same milestone.

Additionally, Barcelona’s No. 10 became the first player this century to score 25 goals in Europe’s top five leagues before turning 19, reinforcing the notion that his development is unfolding at an unprecedented rate.

Comparisons to all-time greats may be premature, but statistically and stylistically, Yamal’s rise has been extraordinary.

Despite the personal accolades, Yamal remained grounded. Speaking after the match, he emphasized the importance of Barcelona’s victory in their La Liga title push.

Addressing expectations around his scoring, he joked that people seem to want him to net “100 goals at 16,” acknowledging both the hype and the difficulty of meeting such lofty standards.

He expressed happiness simply in helping the team, whether through one goal or several.

Yamal also candidly discussed a challenging start to the season, citing personal struggles and a groin injury that affected his happiness on the pitch.

Recently, however, he feels revitalized and motivated, rediscovering the joy in his game.

Looking ahead, Barcelona face a daunting Copa del Rey semifinal second leg against Atlético Madrid, trailing 4–0.

Yet Yamal remains optimistic, urging supporters to believe in another memorable comeback at home.
