Jorge Jesus explains why the Ronaldo controversy escalated

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has defended his handling of Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting the controversy surrounding the forward’s unused appearance against Norway was largely driven by his status as a national icon.

Jesus made the remarks following Portugal’s latest UEFA Nations League fixture, where questions about his relationship with the country’s all-time leading goalscorer continued to dominate the post-match discussion.

The 72-year-old coach questioned why Ronaldo’s situation had attracted so much attention, arguing that other players had also warmed up without eventually being introduced during matches without generating similar controversy.

“In my opinion, you can’t hold a one-year friendship against someone over a situation that is difficult to understand”, Jesus said.

“Just because it was him. Just because it was him, and perhaps rightly so, because he is a symbol, this whole issue of warming up and not warming up, coming on and not coming on, has been created”.

He added:“How many players warmed up today and didn’t come on? How many? Is there going to be a problem with any of them? No”.

The comments came amid growing speculation about a breakdown in relations between the two Portuguese football figures after Ronaldo unexpectedly departed the national team’s training camp ahead of their Nations League encounter against Denmark.

According to reports, the 41-year-old forward was left frustrated after being informed that he would not start against Denmark, having also remained an unused substitute during Portugal's 2-1 victory over Norway.

The situation attracted widespread attention after Ronaldo announced his departure from the camp, promising to explain his decision at a later date.

According to Reuters, Jesus and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca attempted to persuade the forward to remain with the squad, even travelling to Copenhagen airport after his departure.

Jesus, who previously worked with Ronaldo at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, has repeatedly played down suggestions of a personal feud, describing the situation as a misunderstanding rather than an irreparable disagreement.

His latest remarks also suggest that he wants the issue resolved without damaging their relationship, while maintaining his authority over team selection.

The Guardian previously reported that Ronaldo’s departure had sparked a wider debate in Portugal about his influence within the national team and the changing dynamics surrounding his international career.

Meanwhile, Jesus has made it clear that the door remains open for the veteran striker to return, with his inclusion in future squads dependent on his willingness to continue representing his country.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer, with 146 international goals in 234 appearances, making him one of the most influential figures in the country’s football history.
