Haaland’s late strike sends Norway past Ivory Coast into World Cup last 16

Erling Haaland delivered when it mattered most, scoring a dramatic late winner as Norway defeated Ivory Coast 2-1 to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 after an enthralling knockout clash at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday.

Haaland struck four minutes from time to cap a determined Norwegian performance after Antonio Nusa’s first-half opener had been cancelled out by a brilliant solo effort from Ivory Coast substitute Amad Diallo.

The victory keeps Norway’s World Cup dream alive and sets up a mouthwatering last-16 meeting with five-time champions Brazil, while Ivory Coast bow out despite producing one of their finest displays of the tournament.

Ivory Coast began brightly, showing the confidence that had carried them into the knockout stage for the first time in their history.

Nicolas Pépé and teenage winger Yan Diomande repeatedly stretched the Norwegian defence, while Ghislain Konan came close to opening the scoring with a fierce effort into the side netting.

Pépé also flashed a dangerous cross across the face of goal that narrowly eluded Ange-Yoan Bonny.

Despite spending much of the opening half under pressure, Norway struck with ruthless efficiency in the 39th minute.

Captain Martin Ødegaard threaded a pass to Antonio Nusa, who cut inside from the left before curling an unstoppable right-footed strike into the top corner beyond Yahia Fofana to give the Scandinavian side a 1-0 lead.

Norway nearly doubled their advantage before the interval, but Haaland and Alexander Sørloth were both denied.

Ivory Coast refused to surrender after the break and their persistence paid off in the 74th minute.

Introduced from the bench by coach Emerse Faé, Amad Diallo exchanged passes with Pépé before weaving past two defenders and bending a superb finish beyond Ørjan Nyland to level the contest and ignite celebrations among the Ivorian supporters.

The equaliser transformed the match into an end-to-end battle, but Norway gradually regained control through the midfield trio of Ødegaard, Patrick Berg and Sander Berge.

Their pressure finally told in the 86th minute when substitute Oscar Bobb released Berg down the left.

The midfielder’s perfectly weighted low cross found Haaland, who arrived at the far post to tap home from close range for his fifth goal of the tournament.

Ivory Coast mounted one final assault during eight minutes of stoppage time and almost forced extra time when Diallo curled a dangerous free-kick toward the top corner, only for Nyland to produce a spectacular save.

The Elephants even sent goalkeeper Yahia Fofana forward for a last-gasp corner, but Norway stood firm until the final whistle.

The result extends Norway’s impressive World Cup campaign and underlines the importance of Haaland, whose decisive finish once again proved the difference in a high-pressure encounter.
