Five managers who could replace Michael Carrick at Man Utd

Michael Carrick’s position at Manchester United has come under increasing scrutiny after a difficult start to the 2026/27 season, with the club reportedly assessing the managerial market should a change become necessary.

United have won only one of their opening four Premier League matches and were knocked out of the League Cup on Wednesday after surrendering a two-goal lead in a 3-2 defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion.

Carrick, who guided United to third place last season before being appointed permanently, now faces a crucial period as the club looks to recover its early-season form.

Reports suggest United are conducting due diligence on potential alternatives, although there has been no confirmation that Carrick is facing an imminent dismissal.

• Eddie Howe

Howe is among the most prominent names linked with United.

The Englishman is currently without a club after leaving Newcastle United in the summer of 2026.

During his time at Newcastle, Howe helped establish the club as a regular contender for European football and guided them to Champions League qualification and domestic success.

His Premier League experience would also make him a familiar figure in the English game.

• Julian Nagelsmann

Nagelsmann is another manager being monitored.

The German left his position as Germany head coach after the 2026 World Cup and is therefore available for a new club appointment.

The 39-year-old has previously managed Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, giving him experience of leading major European teams despite his relatively young age.

• Thomas Tuchel

Tuchel is also understood to have been considered in discussions around United’s managerial options.

The German has extensive Premier League experience from his time at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League.

However, a move would be complicated by his current involvement with England, meaning United would potentially have to negotiate around an existing international commitment.

• Unai Emery

Aston Villa manager Emery is another experienced name associated with the discussion.

The Spaniard has managed at the highest level in Spain, France and England and has won the Europa League four times.

His current position at Villa means any approach would involve more than simply negotiating personal terms with an unattached coach.

• Kieran McKenna

McKenna, who has Premier League experience with Ipswich Town, has also been mentioned among possible candidates.

The former Manchester United coach has developed a reputation for progressive football during his managerial career and remains a name associated with the club’s wider managerial discussions.

However, unlike Howe and Nagelsmann, he is currently under contract.

For now, Carrick remains in charge and United’s immediate focus is on Sunday’s Premier League trip to Fulham, where another setback would increase the scrutiny surrounding the former midfielder.
