FIFA Series 2026: Kwizera, Mugisha and Mickels trio lead Rwanda to Glory
Rwanda’s triumph at the FIFA Series 2026 in Kigali was defined by standout individual performances, inspiring returns, and unique stories that highlighted the growing strength and unity within the Amavubi squad.
One of the most remarkable narratives was the return of goalkeeper Kwizera Olivier, who delivered outstanding performances after a long absence from international football.
Featuring prominently in both matches, the experienced shot-stopper played a decisive role in Rwanda’s successful campaign, keeping clean sheets in back-to-back victories.
Kwizera first made his mark in Rwanda’s emphatic 4–0 win over Grenada, where he displayed composure, sharp reflexes, and strong command of his area.
He followed that with another assured performance in the final against Estonia, helping the Amavubi secure a 2–0 victory and lift the trophy in front of home supporters.
His return to the national team, his first since September 2022, underlined his determination and readiness to reclaim his place, offering a major boost to head coach Stephen Constantine as he continues to shape his squad.
In midfield, Bonheur Mugisha remains a key figure among Rwanda’s international-based players.
The powerful defensive midfielder, currently playing for Al Masry SC in Egypt, has steadily developed into one of the team’s most reliable performers. Standing at 1.90 meters, Mugisha brings physical presence, tactical awareness, and defensive discipline to the team.
Since making his senior debut in January 2022 against Guinea, Mugisha has earned over 20 caps and become a consistent presence in the Amavubi setup.
His experience across North Africa, including spells in Tunisia with Stade Tunisien and AS Marsa, as well as in Libya with Al Ahli SC Benghazi, has shaped his ability to read the game and provide crucial protection to the defense.
His role in maintaining balance between defense and attack continues to be vital for Rwanda’s progress on the international stage.
Another highlight of Rwanda’s FIFA Series victory was the inspiring story of the Mickels brothers, whose presence added both quality and emotion to the tournament.
Leroy-Jacques Mickels received his first call-up in March 2026, joining his twin brothers Joy-Lance and Joy-Slayd Mickels in the national team—a rare and special moment in Rwandan football.
The trio, who share Congolese-Rwandan heritage, brought energy and attacking flair to the squad.
Leroy-Jacques made an immediate impact, scoring in the final against Estonia, while Joy-Lance contributed with creativity and assists.
Their chemistry on the pitch reflected their strong family bond, which resonated with fans and added excitement to Rwanda’s performances.
All three brothers are currently based in Azerbaijan, where they continue to develop their professional careers—Joy-Lance at Sabah FC, Joy-Slayd at Karvan Yevlakh, and Leroy-Jacques at Zira FK.
Their journey from club football abroad to representing Rwanda together on home soil symbolizes the increasing global reach of Rwandan talent.
Together, these stories defined Rwanda’s successful FIFA Series campaign. From Kwizera’s commanding return, to Mugisha’s midfield stability, and the Mickels brothers’ historic appearance, the Amavubi demonstrated growth, unity, and ambition.
As Rwanda looks ahead to future competitions, the blend of experienced players, emerging talents, and international exposure provides a strong foundation.
The FIFA Series 2026 not only delivered silverware but also reinforced belief in the team’s potential to compete and succeed on the international stage.
