Donnarumma, Mbeumo, Lewandowski, Højlund, Szoboszlai headline big names missing 2026 World Cup

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup line-up set, top stars like Donnarumma, Mbeumo, Lewandowski, Højlund, and Szoboszlai will miss out as their nations failed to qualify, underscoring football’s harsh international stage.

As all 48 nations now confirmed for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, the spotlight has inevitably shifted to the biggest stars who will miss out—elite talents whose absence underlines just how unforgiving international qualification remains, even in a larger tournament.

Among the most dazzling names is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose creativity and flair have lit up European football, but whose nation Georgia failed to secure a historic qualification.

Similarly, Brazilian forward Rodrygo Silva de Goes misses out due to injury concerns.

Veteran goal machine Robert Lewandowski will also be absent after Poland fell short in UEFA qualifying, marking a significant loss of experience and goals.

In goal, Gianluigi Donnarumma—one of the world’s top goalkeepers—misses out as Italy endured another disappointing qualification campaign.

Africa is heavily represented among the absentees. Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman both miss the tournament after Nigeria failed to qualify, while Bryan Mbeumo is absent as Cameroon also fell short.

Meanwhile, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will not feature after Gabon could not make it through.

In Europe, midfield talent Sandro Tonali joins Donnarumma in missing out, while Rasmus Højlund and Christian Eriksen are absent after Denmark failed to qualify.

Hungary’s rising stars Dominik Szoboszlai and Milos Kerkez will also miss the tournament as Hungary fell short.

Elsewhere, Dušan Vlahović and Benjamin Šeško miss out following disappointing campaigns from Serbia and Slovenia respectively, while Jan Oblak—one of the world’s finest goalkeepers—will also not be present.

From Africa’s emerging talents, Serhou Guirassy is another major absentee after Guinea narrowly missed qualification, denying fans the chance to see one of Europe’s most in-form strikers on the global stage.

Despite the expansion to 48 teams, which was expected to open doors for more nations, the qualification process has once again proven ruthless.

Strong individual performances at club level could not compensate for collective shortcomings at international level.

As a result, the 2026 World Cup—hosted across United States, Canada, and Mexico—will proceed without a host of elite names.

Their absence is a reminder that football’s greatest stage demands not just individual brilliance, but a complete team effort—something even the game’s brightest stars cannot achieve alone.
