Atletico, PSG seal Champions League semi-final spots after dramatic Quarter-final wins
Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain booked their places in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals after dramatic and contrasting victories over FC Barcelona and Liverpool respectively, setting up a thrilling conclusion to Europe’s elite competition.
At the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Atletico Madrid advanced with a hard-fought 3–2 aggregate triumph despite falling 2–1 on the night to Barcelona.
Under the guidance of Diego Simeone, Atletico demonstrated their trademark resilience and tactical discipline to reach the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.
Barcelona, led by Hansi Flick, started the second leg in electric fashion. Teen sensation Lamine Yamal opened the scoring just four minutes in, finishing coolly after being set up by Ferran Torres.
Torres then doubled the lead in the 24th minute with a composed strike, leveling the tie on aggregate and igniting hopes of a comeback.
However, Atletico responded decisively. A swift counterattack orchestrated by Marcos Llorente ended with Ademola Lookman firing home in the 31st minute—what would ultimately prove to be the decisive goal across both legs.
Barcelona thought they had equalized again in the second half through Torres, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
The visitors’ task became even more difficult when Eric García was sent off in the 79th minute for a last-man foul.
Atletico capitalized on their numerical advantage, holding firm defensively, with goalkeeper Juan Musso producing a series of crucial saves to preserve their aggregate lead.
Meanwhile, at Anfield, PSG delivered a clinical and composed performance to eliminate Liverpool with a 2–0 win on the night, sealing a commanding 4–0 aggregate victory.
Managed by Luis Enrique, the French champions showcased their ability to absorb pressure and strike with precision.
Liverpool, under Arne Slot, began with intensity and created multiple chances in front of their home fans.
However, their efforts were undermined by a lack of finishing quality and an early injury to Hugo Ekitiké, who was stretchered off in the first half.
A pivotal moment came when Liverpool were awarded a penalty following a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister, only for the decision to be overturned after VAR intervention.
PSG seized control thereafter, with Ousmane Dembélé breaking the deadlock in the 72nd minute with a superb curling effort.
As Liverpool pushed forward in desperation, gaps emerged in their defense.
PSG exploited this ruthlessly, with Bradley Barcola leading a rapid counterattack before setting up Dembélé for his second goal of the night, effectively ending the contest.
The result confirmed a disappointing end to Liverpool’s European campaign and a trophyless season, while PSG underlined their credentials as serious contenders to retain the title.
Their defensive solidity, combined with lethal counterattacking, has made them one of the most formidable sides in the competition.
Looking ahead, Atletico Madrid will face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semi-finals, while PSG are set for a blockbuster clash against either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.
With high stakes, elite talent, and contrasting styles on display, the Champions League semi-finals promise to deliver more unforgettable moments as Europe’s top clubs battle for continental glory.
