Spanish Super Cup heads to Türkiye

The Spanish Super Cup will leave Saudi Arabia for a one-off trip to Türkiye in 2027, with Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium set to host the four-team tournament from February 2 to 7.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Thursday that LaLiga champions Barcelona, runners-up Real Madrid, Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad and finalists Atlético Madrid will compete for the trophy.

The decision brings the competition to Türkiye for the first time and ends five consecutive Saudi Arabian editions.

The move is primarily a scheduling issue rather than a permanent change of host.

Saudi Arabia, which has staged the Super Cup since the revamped competition began its international expansion, will host the 2027 Asian Cup from January 7 to February 5.

The clash makes it impossible to stage the Spanish tournament there at its usual time, prompting the RFEF to consider alternative international venues.

Istanbul was selected after several proposals were evaluated.

The Atatürk Olympic Stadium provides a fitting stage.

The Istanbul venue has hosted major European football occasions, including Champions League finals, and will give the Super Cup another prominent international setting.

Barcelona arrive as holders after beating Real Madrid 3-2 in the 2026 final in Jeddah to claim a record-extending 16th Super Cup.

Real Madrid are second on the all-time list with 13 titles, while Athletic Club and Deportivo La Coruña have three each and Atlético Madrid have won two.

The Supercopa de España has a history stretching back to 1982, when it was contested by the league and Copa del Rey champions.

For decades it was played within Spain and generally over two legs.

The competition first crossed Spain's borders in 2018, when Barcelona defeated Sevilla 2-1 in Tangier, Morocco.

A major transformation followed in 2020.

The RFEF expanded the tournament to four teams, bringing together the top two LaLiga finishers and the two Copa del Rey finalists, while moving the competition from its traditional summer slot to January.

Saudi Arabia became the first host of the new Final Four, with Real Madrid beating Atlético Madrid on penalties in Jeddah to win the inaugural edition under the revised format.

The decision to take the competition abroad was driven largely by the federation’s search for a commercially stronger international event, with Saudi Arabia offering a lucrative partnership.

However, the arrangement also generated controversy, particularly over human-rights concerns and the commercial deal surrounding the tournament.

Al Jazeera reported in 2019 that Spanish state broadcaster RTVE declined to bid for the Saudi broadcasting rights, citing concerns over the country's human-rights record.

Despite the controversy, the overseas model has become an established feature of the Super Cup.

Istanbul will therefore represent a temporary detour rather than a new permanent home.

Barcelona have confirmed that the tournament is expected to return to Saudi Arabia in 2028, restoring the Gulf kingdom as host once the Asian Cup scheduling conflict has passed.
