PHOTOS: Aston Villa beat SC Freiburg to lift Europa League trophy
Aston Villa defeated SC Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul to win the UEFA Europa League and secure the club’s first major European trophy in more than four decades.
The final, played at Tüpraş Stadyumu, saw Unai Emery’s side dominate from start to finish as goals from Youri Tielemans, Emiliano Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealed a memorable victory for the Premier League club.
Villa entered the final as favourites due to their strong European form and the experience of manager Unai Emery, widely regarded as one of the greatest Europa League coaches in history.
The Spaniard added a fifth Europa League title to his collection after previously winning the competition three consecutive times with Sevilla FC in 2014, 2015 and 2016, before lifting it again with Villarreal CF in 2021.
For Aston Villa, the triumph marked another glorious chapter in the club’s European history.
Their last major continental success came in 1982 when they stunned FC Bayern Munich 1-0 in the European Cup final at De Kuip Stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
That victory remains one of English football’s most celebrated achievements and secured Villa’s only European Cup title.
Villa’s latest Europa League success now gives the club two major UEFA trophies in its history.
The 1982 European Cup and the 1982 UEFA Super Cup, where they defeated FC Barcelona over two legs.
Wednesday’s victory therefore becomes their third major UEFA honour and their first European silverware in 44 years.
The breakthrough in Istanbul arrived in the 41st minute when Tielemans produced a stunning volley from a cleverly-worked corner routine.
Freiburg had defended solidly for much of the opening half but were shaken by the goal.
Moments later, Buendía doubled Villa’s lead with a magnificent curling strike into the top corner just before halftime.
Freiburg, playing in the first major European final in the club’s history, struggled to recover after the break.
Their hopes were effectively ended in the 58th minute when Rogers finished calmly from Buendía’s low cross to make it 3-0.
Villa controlled possession throughout the contest and limited Freiburg to very few opportunities.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez once again demonstrated his big-game experience with several important saves, while captain John McGinn inspired the midfield with relentless energy.
The victory also secures Aston Villa a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, completing a remarkable turnaround under Emery since his arrival at the club.
What began as a rebuilding project has now turned into one of the greatest modern success stories in European football, with Villa fans celebrating a night they will remember for generations.
