Asian Cup: Australia Women beat North Korea to secure World Cup spot
Australia women's national soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the AFC Women's Asian Cup after securing a hard-fought 2–1 victory against North Korea women's national football team on Friday.
The win not only moved Australia closer to the continental title but also guaranteed the team a place at the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, which will be held in Brazil.
Star forward Sam Kerr played a decisive role in the victory, scoring one goal and setting up another to help guide the Matildas into the last four of the tournament.
Despite facing strong pressure from North Korea throughout the match, Australia made the most of its opportunities to secure the important result.
North Korea, three-time champions of the competition, dominated possession for much of the game and controlled the tempo, keeping Australia under constant pressure.
The Asian powerhouse registered an impressive 21 shots during the match, with 10 of them on target.
However, the North Koreans struggled to convert their chances against a determined Australian defence and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold.
Australia took the lead early in the ninth minute after Kerr showed great determination near the right corner flag.
The forward won possession from North Korean captain An Kuk Hyang and delivered a cross into the penalty area.
The ball deflected into the path of defender Alanna Kennedy, who reacted quickly to fire a powerful left-footed strike into the net, scoring her fifth goal of the tournament.
The Matildas doubled their advantage shortly after the start of the second half.
Just two minutes after the restart, Kerr capitalised on a defensive lapse from the North Korean backline to score with a composed left-foot finish, making it 2–0 and giving Australia a valuable cushion.
North Korea responded strongly and intensified its attacking efforts.
Their persistence paid off in the 65th minute when Kim Kyong Yong delivered a precise pass into the box from the left side, allowing Chae Un Yong to finish from close range and reduce the deficit to 2–1.
From that moment, North Korea launched a series of attacks in search of an equaliser, but Arnold produced several key saves to preserve Australia’s lead.
Kerr later praised her team’s defensive effort, acknowledging the quality of their opponents and the pressure they faced throughout the match.
With the victory, Australia now advances to the semifinals where they will face the winner of the quarterfinal clash between China women's national football team and Chinese Taipei women's national football team.
Meanwhile, North Korea still has a chance to qualify for the World Cup through the playoff stage, as the teams finishing fifth and sixth in the tournament will also secure places in the global competition.
The tournament continues with several exciting quarterfinal matches, including encounters involving South Korea women's national football team, Uzbekistan women's national football team, Japan women's national football team and Philippines women's national football team.
