Tottenham complete club-record £85m signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham
Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of highly rated Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a club-record deal worth £85 million, underlining the North London club’s ambition ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The transfer eclipses Tottenham’s previous record of £65 million, paid to sign Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth in August 2024.
Fernandes could lose his status as Spurs’ most expensive signing if the club finalizes a separate deal worth up to £100 million for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Manchester United were also strongly interested in signing the 21-year-old and held extensive discussions over a potential move.
However, the Old Trafford club were unwilling to match Tottenham’s £85 million valuation and were uncertain about Fernandes’ desire to join them.
Tottenham remained determined throughout the negotiations and were prepared to outbid any rival to secure one of the Premier League’s brightest young midfield talents.
West Ham officials believe Fernandes has the potential to develop into one of the world’s elite midfielders, comparing his long-term prospects to former captain Declan Rice, who joined Arsenal for £105 million in 2023.
Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie Redknapp described the signing as a significant statement of intent, saying Fernandes is exactly the type of dynamic, all-action midfielder Spurs have lacked in recent seasons.
He added that the club’s aggressive recruitment reflects a determination to challenge for major honours after several disappointing campaigns.
Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge also labelled the transfer a ‘Mega statement of intent’, noting that Tottenham promised major investment following the end of last season and have moved decisively to strengthen their squad.
Fernandes earned widespread praise during the 2025-26 Premier League campaign for his tireless work rate, aggressive ball-winning ability and tactical intelligence.
He ranked among the league’s top midfielders for tackles and distance covered, demonstrating his ability to influence matches at both ends of the pitch.
Former Southampton coach Simon Rusk revealed that Fernandes initially played in a more advanced attacking midfield role but always viewed himself as a complete box-to-box midfielder.
His development at West Ham saw him excel as both a No. 6 and No. 8, combining defensive discipline with energy, composure and technical quality.
Born on July 10, 2004, in Portugal, Mateus Fernandes began his professional career with Sporting CP, progressing through the club’s renowned academy before gaining senior experience.
He later spent time on loan with Estoril Praia, where his performances attracted widespread attention.
Following his move to Southampton, Fernandes continued his development in English football before joining West Ham United, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout young midfielders.
