FERWAFA unveils 2026-27 club licensing roadmap
The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) has launched the 2026-27 club licensing process, unveiling key deadlines, compliance requirements, and inspection schedules to help clubs meet participation standards for the upcoming season.
The club licensing programme, which serves as a cornerstone of football governance and professionalization, is designed to ensure that clubs meet the minimum standards required for participation in domestic competitions.
The process evaluates clubs against a range of sporting, infrastructure, administrative, legal, and financial criteria aimed at promoting sustainable football development.
According to the schedule released by FERWAFA, clubs will begin preparations by submitting information regarding their stadiums and training facilities between 25 June and 7 July 2026.
The official licensing cycle will commence on 1 July, marking the start of the assessment period for clubs seeking eligibility to compete during the upcoming season.
As part of the licensing procedure, FERWAFA’s Club Licensing Department will conduct inspections of stadiums and training venues from 9 to 30 July.
These assessments are intended to verify compliance with infrastructure requirements, including playing surfaces, safety measures, dressing rooms, medical facilities, media areas, and other operational standards necessary for hosting official matches.
To support clubs throughout the process, the federation has scheduled annual club licensing workshops involving teams from the BK Pro League, Second Division, Third Division, Women’s Super League, Women’s Championship, and Regional League Championship.
The workshops will provide technical guidance on licensing regulations, documentation requirements, and best practices in club management and governance.
In addition to infrastructure assessments, clubs will be required to submit all relevant licensing documentation within the stipulated deadlines.
BK Pro League clubs must complete and submit their applications by 30 July, while Second Division clubs have until 3 August to finalize their submissions.
The licensing process will culminate in a review phase conducted by the First Instance Body (FIB), the independent decision-making authority responsible for evaluating applications and determining whether clubs satisfy the licensing criteria.
The FIB will review applications between 1 and 8 August for BK Pro League and Second Division clubs before issuing final decisions.
FERWAFA has emphasized that club licensing remains a vital instrument in enhancing professionalism within Rwandan football.
By enforcing minimum standards in governance, infrastructure, youth development, financial management, and sporting administration, the system seeks to strengthen the competitiveness and credibility of domestic competitions.
The licensing framework also plays a crucial role in improving club operations and ensuring that participating teams are adequately prepared to meet the demands of modern football.
Clubs that successfully obtain licenses will be eligible to participate in their respective competitions during the 2026/27 season.
With the licensing calendar now confirmed, clubs are expected to intensify preparations, complete the necessary compliance measures, and ensure they meet all regulatory requirements ahead of the new football campaign.
