FERWAFA launches elite FIFA goalkeeper training programme for youth football coaches

The Rwanda Football Federation, FERWAFA, has officially launched the FIFA Elite Youth Goalkeeper Coaches’ Workshop in Kigali as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen football development and improve coaching standards across the country.

The five-day workshop began on Monday, May 18, at the FERWAFA Accommodation Facility in Remera and will continue until May 22.

The program brings together some of Rwanda’s most promising youth and goalkeeper coaches for intensive technical and practical training designed to align local football development with modern international standards.

The workshop was officially opened by FERWAFA Second Vice President in charge of Technical Matters and Development, Richard Mugisha, who highlighted the importance of investing in coach education to improve the future of Rwandan football.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, Mugisha encouraged participants to maximize the opportunity by learning from FIFA’s experienced instructors and technical experts.

“This training is very important not only for the personal growth of the coaches but also for the long-term development of football in Rwanda,” Mugisha said.

“We believe the knowledge gained here will help shape better players and stronger football structures in the country.” he added

The initiative forms part of FIFA’s specialized development programs organized in collaboration with football associations around the world.

The main objective is to strengthen the technical and tactical abilities of coaches working with young goalkeepers while adapting to the increasing demands of the modern game.

The course is being led by FIFA expert Callum Irving together with a team of five specialists, including coaching instructors, goalkeeper development experts, a fitness trainer, and a course coordinator.

A total of 45 participants are attending the workshop, including 24 coaches and 21 goalkeeper coaches from different football academies, clubs, and development structures across Rwanda.

Participants are taking part in both classroom theory sessions and practical field training focused on modern goalkeeping techniques, youth player development, fitness conditioning, performance analysis, tactical positioning, and psychological preparation for young athletes.

According to FERWAFA, the coaches selected for the program were chosen based on the quality of work they have demonstrated in youth football development and their contribution to nurturing young talent in Rwanda.

The federation believes the workshop will play a key role in raising the overall standard of coaching in the country while equipping local coaches with updated international methodologies that can improve player development at grassroots and elite youth levels.

Goalkeeping has increasingly become one of the most specialized areas in modern football, requiring coaches to understand advanced tactical systems, technical positioning, ball distribution, reflex development, and physical conditioning.

FIFA’s support through such educational programs is expected to help Rwanda continue building a stronger football foundation capable of competing at higher continental and international levels.
