Crystal Palace etched their name into European football history in Leipzig after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final to claim the club’s first-ever continental trophy.
In a tense and hard-fought encounter at Red Bull Arena, French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta emerged as the hero for the Eagles, scoring the decisive goal in the 51st minute to hand Crystal Palace a historic triumph and complete an unforgettable era under manager Oliver Glasner.
The winning moment arrived after midfielder Adam Wharton surged through midfield and unleashed a powerful effort from distance.
Goalkeeper Augusto Batalla parried the shot into the path of Mateta, who reacted quickest to bundle the rebound into the net and spark wild celebrations among more than 18,000 Palace supporters in attendance.
Palace were the better side throughout much of the contest and created the clearer opportunities.
They nearly doubled their advantage moments later when Yéremi Pino struck a sensational free-kick that crashed against both posts before bouncing away.
Mateta also squandered a golden opportunity shortly after, denied brilliantly by Batalla from close range.
Despite late pressure from Rayo Vallecano, Palace defended resolutely with standout performances from Tyrick Mitchell, Maxence Lacroix and captain Dean Henderson preserving the slender lead until the final whistle.
The victory capped a remarkable European journey for Crystal Palace in what was the club’s maiden continental campaign.
Palace began their Conference League adventure in the qualifying rounds during the summer and steadily grew into one of the tournament’s most consistent sides.
They overcame difficult trips across Europe, produced memorable victories in both the group stage and knockout rounds, and displayed resilience, tactical discipline and attacking quality throughout the competition.
Under Glasner, Palace defeated several experienced European opponents on their route to the final, while stars such as Mateta, Wharton, Ismaïla Sarr and Daniel Muñoz consistently delivered in crucial moments.
The Austrian coach leaves Selhurst Park having transformed the club into trophy winners both domestically and internationally.
The Conference League triumph also secured Crystal Palace a place in next season’s UEFA Europa League and added another historic chapter to the club’s growing legacy.
Crystal Palace have now won three major trophies in their history.
The 2025 FA Cup, the 2025 Community Shield and the 2026 UEFA Conference League.
The latest success marks their first international title and confirms one of the greatest periods the South London club has ever experienced.
