Chelsea appoint Alonso on four-year deal

Chelsea F.C. have appointed Xabi Alonso as manager on a four-year deal, with the Spaniard beginning work at Stamford Bridge on July 1.

Alonso returns to management only months after leaving Real Madrid CF earlier this year and arrives as Chelsea’s top choice to lead a major rebuild at the club.

Speaking after the announcement, Alonso said he was proud to join one of the biggest clubs in world football.

He explained that discussions with Chelsea’s ownership convinced him they shared the same ambition of building a team capable of competing regularly for major trophies.

Alonso also praised the talent already within the squad and promised to focus on creating the right culture and mentality needed for success.

Chelsea moved quickly for Alonso after dismissing Liam Rosenior in April following only three months in charge.

Unlike previous appointments under the BlueCo ownership, Alonso will hold the title of “manager” rather than “head coach,” highlighting the significant authority he is expected to have over football operations and long-term planning at the club.

The announcement came shortly after Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester City F.C. in the FA Cup final, a result that increased pressure on the club after another disappointing domestic season.

Chelsea currently sit ninth in the Premier League and risk missing out on European football for the second time since BlueCo took over.

Alonso had also been linked with a possible return to Liverpool F.C. amid criticism surrounding current boss Arne Slot, but Chelsea acted decisively to secure his signature ahead of other interested clubs.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola and Fulham boss Marco Silva were also considered during the recruitment process.

The former midfielder arrives with a growing reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.

After beginning his coaching career with Real Madrid’s youth teams and later managing Real Sociedad B, Alonso gained international recognition at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

During the 2023/24 season, he guided the German side to an unbeaten Bundesliga title and a domestic double while setting a European record of 51 consecutive matches without defeat.

Chelsea executives reportedly believe Alonso’s calm leadership, tactical flexibility and discipline make him the ideal figure to stabilise the club after years of inconsistency.

The board also expects him to play a major role in summer recruitment, with Chelsea targeting experienced first-team players, especially in defence.

Gary Neville described the move as a major statement by Chelsea, saying the club finally needed someone capable of managing every aspect of football operations.

Many supporters have welcomed the appointment, viewing Alonso as the strongest managerial choice available and hoping he can restore Chelsea’s status among Europe’s elite clubs.
