Brazil name Neymar in 26-man World Cup squad
Brazil national football team have officially announced their 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with legendary forward Neymar making a dramatic return to the national team under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The squad announcement sparked excitement across Brazil as fans gathered outside Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Tomorrow, chanting Neymar’s name and demanding his inclusion in what could be the final World Cup appearance of his career.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 international goals, has not played for the national team since 2023 after struggling with injuries and fitness problems.
His absence from Ancelotti’s earlier squad in March had raised doubts over whether he would feature at the tournament.
However, the Italian coach confirmed the Santos star had regained fitness and consistency in recent months, convincing the technical staff that he remains an important figure for Brazil’s World Cup ambitions.
Brazil are aiming to win their sixth World Cup title and first since 2002.
The Seleção remain the most successful team in World Cup history, having previously lifted the trophy in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002.
Expectations are high once again as the tournament heads to North America.
The squad includes several experienced stars alongside exciting young talents. In goal, Brazil selected Alisson Becker, Ederson and Weverton.
The defensive unit is led by veterans such as Marquinhos, Danilo and Alex Sandro, while Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães and Juventus centre-back Bremer were also included.
In midfield, the experienced Casemiro returns alongside Bruno Guimarães and Fabinho.
The attack will be led by Real Madrid superstar Vinícius Júnior, Barcelona winger Raphinha and Neymar.
Young talents such as Endrick, Matheus Cunha and Gabriel Martinelli were also selected as Brazil attempt to balance experience with youth.
Ancelotti’s squad selection also produced several surprise omissions. Chelsea duo João Pedro and Andrey Santos were left out despite strong expectations they could make the final squad.
Veteran defender Thiago Silva, who appeared in four previous World Cups, was also omitted alongside goalkeeper Bento.
The Brazilian coach admitted he felt sympathy for players who missed out but insisted difficult decisions were necessary.
He said younger players left at home would still have opportunities with the national team in future tournaments.
Brazil begin their World Cup campaign in Group C against Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, with many fans believing Neymar’s return could provide the inspiration needed to finally end the country’s long wait for another world title.
