Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid after nine-year spell in England
Real Madrid have secured one of the most significant free transfers of the summer after completing the signing of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva following the expiration of his contract with Manchester City.
The 31-year-old has signed a two-year contract at the Santiago Bernabéu, bringing an end to a glittering nine-year spell in England and marking the latest major addition to Jose Mourinho's rebuilding project in the Spanish capital.
Silva arrives at a Real Madrid side determined to return to the summit of European football after enduring two consecutive seasons without winning either La Liga or the UEFA Champions League.
His signing follows the arrival of Spanish international Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth up to £51.8 million, while further reinforcements including Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate are expected to be announced soon.
Although Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were among the clubs interested in securing his services, Silva chose Real Madrid, convinced by Mourinho’s vision and the club's renewed ambition under re-elected president Florentino Perez.
For Silva, the move represents the latest chapter in a remarkable career that has taken him from Lisbon to Monaco, Manchester and now Madrid.
Born on August 10, 1994, Silva emerged from Benfica’s famed academy and made his professional breakthrough with the Portuguese giants before moving to AS Monaco in 2014.
It was in France where his reputation truly flourished.
Silva became one of the driving forces behind Monaco’s unforgettable 2016/17 Ligue 1 title-winning campaign, helping the club dethrone Paris Saint-Germain and reach the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
His performances attracted the attention of Manchester City, who signed him in the summer of 2017.
What followed was one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
Across nine seasons at the Etihad Stadium, Silva made 460 appearances and scored 76 goals, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders. His intelligence, work rate and technical brilliance made him a key figure under Pep Guardiola as City dominated English football.
During his time in Manchester, Silva lifted six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup.
He also captained the club during his final season, playing every Premier League match as City finished runners-up while winning both domestic cup competitions.
On the international stage, Silva has been equally influential for Portugal.
Having earned more than 100 caps, he has played a central role in one of the nation's most successful eras alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
His international honours include UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025, with Silva being named Player of the Tournament during Portugal’s victorious 2019 campaign.
Individually, Silva’s excellence has been recognised through numerous awards, including Manchester City Player of the Season, selections in the PFA Team of the Year and UEFA Champions League Team of the Season, as well as several Portuguese Footballer of the Year nominations.
His arrival also highlights a noticeable shift in Real Madrid’s recruitment strategy.
Rather than focusing primarily on young prospects with long-term potential, Mourinho is prioritising experienced, proven winners capable of making an immediate impact.
