Atlético Madrid host Rwandan coaches for high-level training course
A delegation of 13 Rwandan coaches, led by Nikita Gicanda, is currently undertaking a high-level five-day study visit in Spain at Atlético de Madrid, in a programme designed to strengthen coaching education and deepen international football cooperation between Rwanda and one of Europe’s most respected clubs.
Organised through a partnership between the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) and Atlético de Madrid, The visit is part of an ongoing effort to enhance the technical capacity of Rwandan football coaches through direct exposure to elite European football environments.
The programme focuses on modern coaching methodology, tactical identity, sports science integration, and structured youth development systems that have made Atlético de Madrid one of the most competitive clubs in La Liga and European competitions.
During the training, the Rwandan coaches are participating in both theoretical classroom sessions and practical field-based exercises.
These sessions are designed to provide hands-on understanding of Atlético de Madrid’s coaching philosophy, including defensive organisation, transition play, pressing structures, and player development pathways from academy level to professional football.
The delegation is also learning how the Spanish club integrates data analysis, performance monitoring, and sports psychology into daily training routines, reflecting the demands of modern high-performance football.
Coaches are being given opportunities to observe academy teams and senior training sessions, allowing them to compare European standards with domestic structures in Rwanda.
According to FERWAFA officials, the visit is part of a broader strategy to raise the standard of coaching education in Rwanda, with the long-term goal of improving player development at grassroots and elite levels.
The federation has emphasised that investing in coach education is a key pillar in building a stronger national football identity and improving competitiveness on the continental stage.
Fabrice Shema, who is also part of the visiting group, held discussions with Atlético de Madrid officials on expanding collaboration between the two institutions.
Talks reportedly focused on long-term cooperation in areas such as coach exchange programmes, youth academy development, technical training camps, and possible pre-season preparations in Rwanda under the “Visit Rwanda” partnership framework.
The “Visit Rwanda” brand, which has already established partnerships with major European clubs, continues to play a central role in positioning Rwanda as a global sports and tourism destination.
The collaboration with Atlético de Madrid is expected to further strengthen Rwanda’s visibility in international football while also creating pathways for knowledge transfer and investment in local football infrastructure.
Officials from both FERWAFA and Atlético de Madrid expressed optimism that the current visit could evolve into a more structured partnership, including annual coaching clinics, talent identification programs, and exchange opportunities for both coaches and young players.
For the Rwandan delegation, the experience is seen as a valuable opportunity to gain insights from a club that consistently competes at the highest level of European football.
Upon return, the coaches are expected to apply the knowledge gained to improve training standards, tactical understanding, and player development systems across Rwanda’s football ecosystem.
This initiative marks another important step in FERWAFA’s long-term vision to modernise football development in Rwanda through international collaboration.
