Michael Carrick appointed new head coach of Manchester United
Michael Carrick has appointed permanent head coach of Manchester United following an impressive turnaround during his interim spell at Old Trafford.
The former Manchester United midfielder, admired during his playing career for his calmness, intelligence and elegant passing style, has now been trusted with leading one of the world’s biggest football clubs into a new era.
Carrick’s appointment has divided opinion among supporters and pundits.
Some believe the former midfielder lacks experience at the highest managerial level, while others argue his understanding of the club, strong relationship with players and composed leadership style make him the ideal choice after several turbulent years at Old Trafford.
Since the retirement of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, Manchester United have struggled to find long-term stability despite appointing some of football’s biggest names.
Experienced coaches such as Louis van Gaal and José Mourinho failed to restore sustained success, while younger managers including Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim also faced difficulties handling the pressure surrounding the club.
Carrick’s calm approach has brought renewed belief to both Carrington and Old Trafford. Players have responded positively to his leadership, and performances improved significantly during the second half of the season.
Victories against rivals including Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool helped secure Champions League qualification and convinced club executives to place their trust in him permanently.
One of Carrick’s biggest achievements has been reconnecting the squad after a difficult first half of the campaign under Amorim.
Young talents such as Kobbie Mainoo, Leny Yoro and Patrick Dorgu have flourished under the new coaching staff, while captain Bruno Fernandes has returned to his best form after being restored to his preferred attacking midfield role.
Carrick has also benefited from an experienced backroom team that includes Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion.
Together, they have improved United defensively while also rebuilding confidence inside the dressing room.
As a player, Carrick enjoyed enormous success at Manchester United after joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006.
During his 12 years at Old Trafford, he won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Europa League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
Widely respected for his tactical intelligence and composure in midfield, Carrick became one of Ferguson’s most trusted players and formed an outstanding partnership with Paul Scholes.
After retiring in 2018, Carrick moved into coaching at Manchester United before later managing Middlesbrough FC, where he earned praise for his attacking football and player development despite operating with limited resources.
Now back at Old Trafford as permanent head coach, Carrick faces perhaps the biggest challenge of his career.
Manchester United are expected to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window, especially in midfield following the expected departure of Casemiro.
Supporters remain cautiously optimistic. Many believe Carrick’s connection to the club and calm leadership style could finally restore stability after years of inconsistency.
Others fear the pressure of Champions League football and heightened expectations may prove too demanding.
