KIGA crowned inaugural Acrobatics and Rhythmic Gymnastics Champions (Photos)
Kigali International Gymnastics Academy (KIGA) were crowned overall champions of the inaugural KIGA Acrobatics and Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship 2026 on Sunday at Iwacu Academy in Kigali.
Organized by Kigali International Gymnastics Academy in partnership with the Rwanda Gymnastics Federation (FERWAGY), the groundbreaking competition brought together more than 150 young gymnasts from schools and institutions across Rwanda.
The event marked an important milestone in the development of gymnastics in the country, providing a competitive platform for athletes to showcase their skills and passion for the sport.
Participating institutions included Iwacu Academy, Green Hills Academy, International School of Kigali (ISK), Bright Angels Academy, La Colombière, Doves Montessori School, Wellspring Academy and Kigali International Gymnastics Academy.
Athletes competed in a range of categories designed to accommodate different age groups and disciplines, including Individual Mini (ages 3–7), Individual Juniors (ages 8–11), Individual Teen (ages 12–16), Individual Seniors (ages 17–25), Individual Rhythmic, and the Ribbon category, a rhythmic gymnastics discipline performed by female athletes.
KIGA demonstrated exceptional technical excellence and consistency throughout the competition, finishing at the top of the medal standings with an impressive haul of 60 gold medals, 16 silver medals, and 10 bronze medals.
Iwacu Academy secured second place after earning 3 gold medals and 39 silver medals, while the International School of Kigali finished third with 3 gold medals and 3 bronze medals.
Speaking after the competition, KIGA Director and Head Coach Pascal Uwayezu, who spearheaded the organization of the event, praised the commitment shown by the athletes and thanked parents, coaches, schools, and partners for their support.
“This championship represents an important step forward for gymnastics development in Rwanda,” Uwayezu said.
“We are grateful to every child who participated, the parents who continue to support their children’s dreams, and the Rwanda Gymnastics Federation for standing with us. This is only the beginning, and we remain committed to creating more opportunities for young athletes to grow and showcase their talents.”, he added
The event was attended by FERWAGY President Eugene Nzabanterura, who congratulated KIGA on successfully hosting the championship and reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to supporting gymnastics development nationwide.
“The success of this competition demonstrates the growing potential of gymnastics in Rwanda,” Nzabanterura said. “FERWAGY will continue working closely with KIGA and all stakeholders to strengthen the sport and inspire the next generation of gymnasts.”
KIGA announced that its next major event will be the Christmas Gymnastics Festival, a cultural gymnastics showcase scheduled for November 2026, as the academy continues to promote excellence, creativity, and youth development through sport.
