Nyamasheke: Twiga Dukina has organized training about play-based learning through Volleyball

On this Wednesday 03 to 6 January 2024, Twiga Dukina has organized a 4-day training aimed to help the youth of Nyamasheke District, Shangi, to become more confident through sports, especially Volleyball.

It’s organized by the founder of Tigwa Dukina, Gerjanne van Ravenhorst in collaboration with the Dutch Volleyball Association, NEVOBO.

22 participants to be trained, 2 Coaches, Mana Jean Paul together with Christine Uwamahoro from Volleyball for Life Coach.

Twiga dukina is an individual enterprise based in Rwanda, Nyamasheke district and Shangi sector.

It’s based on 3 pillars; Education consultancy, Material Development and Social Impact Activities.

It is founded and owned by Gerjanne van Ravenhorst, an education consultant, living for more than 7 years in Rwanda, Nyamasheke.

Gerjanne enjoys living in and with the local community. She observed a great need for coaching and training about play-based learning at all levels (eg. parents, teachers, trainers, policy makers) and the implementation of play-based activities (and sport) in the community.

Many children in primary school face challenges with reading and writing and other academic skills.

Gerjanne believes that one of the reasons of these problems is that children do not play enough and that they don’t partidipate in sports. That’s why she started Twiga dukina (end of 2019).

This project is focused on Childrens from 5-18 years.

Twiga Dukina, has been working since September 2016. In January 2020 Gerjanne established it.

In 2022 she opened Play Center & Community Library of Twiga dukina.

As one of the poorest District in the Country, Gerjanne van Ravenhorst believe to close the gap between the rich and the poor, is important to focus on Human Capital Development of the very poor.

This starts with Holistic Child Development of children in ECE and primary schools.

Play-based education and activities increase the likelihood of success in primary and secondary education and in life.

The brain will develop holistically, which will contribute towards breaking the Cycle of Poverty.

Through all kinds of training Gerjanne wants to build the capacity of the coaches.

They have already obtained their FERWAFA License D certificate (football), done a basketball clinic, first aid workshop and 2 coaches have their License D certificate for Handball.
