Raphael Varane’s Man Utd future uncertain amid contract revelation

Raphael Varane’s Manchester United contract runs out at the end of this season and not in the summer of 2025 as previously believed, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Varane’s deal does include a 12-month option to extend it until 2025, but if left untriggered by the club he could depart as soon as June as a free agent.

Despite being unveiled to much fanfare in 2021, Varane’s future at Old Trafford is far from certain, having lost his place in the starting line-up in recent months. Harry Maguire has been preferred as a right-footed centre-back and even veteran summer arrival Jonny Evans has been ahead of him in the pecking order.

The 30-year-old France international joined from Real Madrid in a deal worth just over £40m, but a new contract at this moment in time is looking highly unlikely. Whether United take up the option on his current deal is also doubtful but the club have not ruled it out.

Beyond Varane, United have several big-name players who could be out of contract in 2024.

Varane’s international teammate Anthony Martial is one player in a similar situation. His contract expires in 2024 and includes an option, but as 90min explained earlier this month, United are unlikely to use it to extend his stay any longer.

United are also considering the options they have on defensive pair Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Both players are out of contract at the end of the season too and 90min understands that United are yet to make a decision on either defender.
