Kylian Mbappe explains why he rejected Real Madrid transfer in 2022

Kylian Mbappe has admitted it was not an easy decision to snub Real Madrid’s interest back in 2022.

Two years ago, Mbappe allowed his Paris Saint-Germain contract to run down and was widely expected to sign on with Madrid, only to perform a spectacular U-turn and pen a bumper new deal with the French giants.

The immediate aftermath brought speculation that Mbappe’s actions would cost him a future move to Madrid, although the Spanish side are now expected to secure his signature this summer after Mbappe confirmed he will leave PSG this summer.

Asked to explain why he turned down Madrid’s first approach, Mbappe told CNN: “It was more than just staying at PSG. It was the World Cup in Qatar. It was many things around these things. It was a big decision, difficult decision…but I don’t regret anything.

“Of course, in a career, you have to take difficult decisions and it’s what I did, but I became the all-time top scorer with PSG. I just want to remember the best things. It was not an easy situation and I wish nobody to live that.”

Mbappe’s next move has not yet been announced but he has recently stressed fans will know the identity of his new club in the coming days.

Madrid’s plan is to confirm Mbappe’s arrival before Euro 2024 and they are legally allowed to do so, despite the fact his contract with PSG does not formally expire until 30 June.

Behind the scenes, however, reports claim Mbappe is locked in a legal battle with PSG over the final payment of his salary.

It is claimed PSG still owe Mbappe €80m – €72m in unpaid wages and a loyalty bonus of €8m – with club officials adamant Madrid should contribute to the sum.
