The Rwanda Karate Federation (FERWAKA) held a one-day training aimed at increasing the knowledge of Black Belt holders, which was attended by 110 Karateka across the country on Saturday, July 22, 2023.

This training took place at the Lycée Notre Dames des Anges in Remera, Kigali, attended by Black Belt holders from the first to the seventh Dan.

FERWAKA Vice President as well as the Head of Referees in FERWAKA, Mwizerwa Dieudonné, said that this training is focused on them because they are the ones who usually teach other Karate players.

“One of the things we focused on was the basic techniques including getting ready to do the Kata [showing off] because it was seen as a major problem. After training, the participants have learned and are going to pass it on to their teams.” He added

Uwimbabazi Naomie, who has been playing Karate for 15 years and also one of the trainees, said that she has gained something because Karate requires continuous training.

“It’s helped me a lot. I already play Karate but there are techniques and rules that keep changing, so if you don’t follow it you keep playing old things but the game changes.” She added

The president of FERWAKA, Niyongabo Damien, said that this program will be held every year because it aims to improve the game for both coaches and players.

“What we wanted, I would say that we have achieved, then another good thing is that we took different categories from Coaches to the players. It is good that they always being upgarde”. He added

FERWAKA expects the Liberation tournament to be held on August 5 and 6 in Rubavu, will be a good opportunity to see if the trainees have understood what they have been taught.

There will also be a referee training on August 27, 2023, which will be focused on the rules of Karate competitions.

This coach’s training program comes after the youth, under 15 years old, which took place on July 15, 2023.
