Handball – Rwanda: The Final Match of the First Division Men’s League ended in Chaos

The First Division Trophy which was to be awarded on Sunday, July 2, 2023, has been returned to storage after a chaos between Police HC and Gicumbi HT refused to continue the match.

The chaos comes after Gicumbi HT claim that they roobed a penalty would have made the difference in the second later.

Before the chaos held at BK-Arena around 11pm, Police HC the defending Champions and Gicumbi HT both teams scored 36 goals.

In the last three seconds, Gicumbi HT got a penalty that could have resulted in a goal, but the referees claimed that the mistake was made after final Whistle. So that five minutes of extra time were called for.

Police HC stayed in the field preparing to play but the Gicumbi HT players refused it.

After refusing to turned back, the Mayor of Gicumbi District, Nzabonimpa Emmanuel who is also their boss urged them to continue the game but they were rude to him.

After all,  the match was postponed. But, the Rwanda Handball Federation Boss, Twahirwa Alfred said that the final decision on this chaos will based on the evidence after to review the footage.

He said, “These are technical issues, although I would say that it is unfortunate, but those in charge, after discussion, saw that it is better to first conduct an investigation and then make decisions that will be shared by everyone.”

We will review and analyse the footage, seeing what happened, then we invite both teams, technicians from all sides before to take a right decision

“This chaos is not good for us and for our game as well, but after analyse at all the possible options, we decided to do end it in this way”. He added

This match will be replayed to determine the Champions of the 2023 season, which will be held at the Kigali Pele Stadium as THEUPDATE understand.

The third place in the Men’s First Division gose to APR HC after edding ES Kigoma 31-24.

In the Men’s Second Division, UR Rukara crowned the Champions after beating Gorillas HC 29-25.

In Women’s, Kiziguro SS are the back to back First Division Champions after trashed ISF Nyamasheke 37-19 while the third place goes to University of Kigali after edging GS Kitabi 33-23.
